Discord changed gaming with friends/communities. Yeah, before there was Ventrillo, and Teamspeak, and other VOIP programs, but Discord brought such diversity to the platform that is utterly destroyed the competition.
You could stream games to a select few people, privately. You could create a private server for people who are fans of your content, or join a server as a fan, and have the chance to speak with your favourite content creator.
It brought gamers together like no other program before it, and no program will after it. And now, Discord is considering a $10B buyout, according to VentureBeat.
According to www.businessofapps.com, Discord is valued at $7B in 2021 and pulled in $130M last year. Personally, I don’t see the reason to offer 42% more value than what the company is worth, but hey… I’m not the one with $10B to throw around.
If Discord does sell to someone, for any amount of money, I genuinely hope it doesn’t change the whole vibe of the platform. For example, once IGN bought Humblebundle, it turned from a charity-driven effort to a quasi-charity quasi-profit driven shadow of what it used to be.
Imagine if they tried to turn the entire thing into a pay-to-use platform… Ugh. Great, now I’m going to had bad dreams about just that tonight.
