10th Opening Ceremony of Worlds Final

Updated:

For the tenth anniversary of the League of Legends Worlds, Riot Games has once again turned the Opening ceremony into a technological showcase, even though it wasn’t as magical as last year’s.

This year at Pudong Football Stadium in Shanghai, the ceremony was split into different parts: it opened with a performance by Chinese pop star Lexie Liu, the voice of Seraphine.

It was then followed by a performance of the last K/DA song performed via augmented reality, which was followed by several anthems from past Worlds events. At the end, as the players were introduced, a virtual, towering version of LoL character Galio appeared on stage by landing with his famous move: Hero’s Entrance.

The main cast of performers were virtual, but they were accompanied by a few dozen real dancers and musicians. The event wasn’t as visually impressive as last year’s holographic showcase, but it was still an impressive feat considering the restraints created by the ongoing pandemic. Riot Games managed to make happy the 6,000 people present at the stadium.

“Worlds 2020 will be the first ever live multi-camera production. […] It’s the most advanced mixed reality rendering system in the world, which will render in real time at 32k resolution and 60 FPS. It’s pretty mind blowing. Worlds 2020 is going to be unlike anything you’ve seen before.” – David Higdon, Head of Global Esports Communications at Riot Games.
