How to Make Fire in Sons of the Forest

Updated:

Fire will be one of your first things to make in Sons of the Forest. It provides light during the night, keeps some of the creatures away, and allows you to cook food.

To make a basic fire, break two sticks on the ground, then light them with a lighter. To make your campfire a bit more advanced surround it with stones and use firewood for fuel.

How to Make Fire in Sons of the Forest

For you to make the simplest campfire you will need two sticks. You can get sticks by chopping down small and thin trees. One tree will usually be enough.

When you gathered your sticks:

  1. Break one stick, and carry on breaking until your character stops
  2. Hold “E” to use the lighter and light the fire.

This is a good start but you can improve it by placing rocks around it. Collect seven rocks, take a rock in your hand, and start placing them around the campfire. The white markings will help you with placement if you will feel confused.

An upgraded campfire lasts longer and is overall more visible than the regular one. Such a campfire will usually last a couple of days without any need to refill it with fuel.

To refill the campfire, come close to it and interact by holding “E”. Then you can add items to your campfire. The most accessible fuel for the campfire is:

  • Leaves
  • Sticks
  • Firewood

How to Make Firewood

Firewood is probably the best fuel to use to fuel your fire in Sons of the Forest. There are a few steps, but through them, you will also get familiar with the new building mechanics in the game.

To make firewood:

  1. Chop down a tree
  2. Chop a log lengthwise
  3. Cut every half crosswise

Now you have eight pieces of wood that can be used as firewood. Grab them and come up to the fire. You don’t have to interact with it. Instead, there will be white guiding arrows like when building.

Left-click your mouse and you will chop the wood in half and add it to the fire. You can only add up to four pieces of firewood at a time. Then you will need to wait until it burns down.

How to Cook on the Fire

The main use of fire is cooking. Although raw food doesn’t poison you, a cooked meal regenerates more hunger. Once you have your fish or meat (human or not) ready head to the campfire.

To cook food on the fire:

  1. Interact with the campfire
  2. From the backpack on the left add the items you want by clicking on them
  3. Alternatively, hold the food in your hand and press “E” in front of the fire

Once your food is cooking keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn. The food will become significantly brown when ready. Come up and collect it by pressing “E”.

Even if the food is cooked it can spoil. Cooked food can usually last around two full days. After that, it will become rotten by turning green. And we don’t recommend eating that. Trust us.
