Borderlands 3 may have another DLC coming, but the question still remains regarding Borderlands 3 DLC Characters… Where are they? Unfortunately… We may not be getting any. Ever!
Way back last September, fans might remember the introduction of The Borderlands Show. The Borderlands Show is essentially a semi-regular podcast of sorts which discusses “all things Borderlands”. The most recent episode, airing this May, discussed details about Borderlands 3’s third campaign add-on, amongst other information.
Well, way back last September, in that first episode of The Borderlands Show… Fans got some rather unwelcome news regarding Post-Launch Borderlands 3 DLC Characters.
“Probably not, no.”
Creative Director Paul Sage
Those three slightly uncertain words seemed to have sealed the deal for Borderlands 3 fans. The response does leave the door open (or unlocked, at least), but it was as good as closed then.
Borderlands 3 DLC Characters Don’t Look Like They’re Coming Anytime Soon
I know, I know. It really doesn’t make much sense. Although Borderlands didn’t have any DLC Characters, both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel did. With such an expansive universe, both in lore and in-game, it would seem foolish to let this opportunity slip… Right?
The decision, unfortunately, does have some logic behind it, though. In the first episode of The Borderlands Show, Sage continued to explain that players simply do not use them as much. They may test out new characters, but before long, they’ll switch back to their mains.
It makes sense, but honestly… It also doesn’t. In these statements, I think Gearbox is unveiling a deeper problem than the perceived unappealing nature of their DLC Characters. Leveling in Borderlands games can be a slog, especially the higher up you go. In both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, I found this to be true. Additional characters are always hit and miss, but the gimmick of playing as Claptrap is enough of a joy in itself for me to at-least get a good 10-20 hours from him.
As Borderlands 3 lifetime continues, without these differing outlets… It can be easy to see why it will start to get stale. The Campaign DLC is exciting, but if you’re bored of your player-character… That impacts enjoyment of the storyline a lot. I always thought Borderlands 3 and the other entries in the series were champions of “playing your way”. Obviously, there are limits, but it seems as if Gearbox are sticking to their restrictive statement. I mean, there is still some DLC coming, so we can only hope. Who would you like to see as a Borderlands 3 DLC Character?
