Recently, the infamous Nintendo Playstation went up for auction through Heritage Auctions and sold for a huge $360,000. This almost one-of-a-kind prototype was rediscovered in someone’s attic back in 2015 and has become the stuff of legends.
The Nintendo Playstation was created as part of a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony. The Playstation was originally designed to add CD-R capabilities to the Super Nintendo and was to be Sony’s first foray into the world of video games. Eventually, the deal fell apart with Nintendo partnering with Phillips instead. Sony went on to create their own console called the “Playstation” which released in 1994, and Sony went on to sell over 450 million consoles across the 4 Playstation generations and over 90 million handheld consoles, with the number still climbing each day. I think its safe to say Sony still did OK, all things considered.
Around 200 Nintendo Playstation prototypes were made, but only one is known to still exist, and this is the one that has now been sold to Pets.com founder Greg McLemore.
Greg sold Pets.com to Amazon some time ago and presumably made a nice little profit on it, allowing him to splash out on items such as the Nintendo Playstation. The good news is that its not expected to be stored away in some rich guy’s mansion; Greg is planning on starting a video game museum, meaning we will all be able to go see and even play it.
Other bidders of the Nintendo Playstation include Keemstar, founder of Drama Alert, who is also planning on opening a video game museum in Buffalo, NY. Unfortunately, Keem’s museum won’t house this piece of video game history.
