Cold War: Dark Matter Ultra Guide

Published:

It wouldn’t be a Call of Duty game without the annual camo grind. Dark Matter Ultra is the completionist camo of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and in this guide, we will tell you everything you need to know about it, how to get it, and a few tips & tricks packed along the way.

Before we begin, everything that we will talk about in this guide is in regards to Multiplayer of the Black Ops Cold War, there are no Zombies or Campaign involved. Just Multiplayer.

How to Unlock Dark Matter in Cold War?

Dark Matter Ultra camo

Camo grind is a staple of Call of Duty games. Some people may find it weird spending so much time on a camo but for CoD players it is a next-level satisfaction. Dark Matter Ultra is the most difficult one to unlock in Cold War and is the most prestigious camo in the game.

Unlocking Dark Matter requires you to have 9 Diamond camos in Cold War Multiplayer. And Diamond camos require Gold camos to be unlocked. Below there is an explanation of how to unlock both of these to at last get the Dark Matter Ultra.

How to Unlock Diamond Camo

Unlocking Diamond camo is quite simple, but very time-consuming. You have to earn Gold camo on a certain number of weapons within a set weapon class. As soon as you do that, you will have a Diamond camo unlocked for each weapon in that class and you can move on to the next one.

Here are the numbers of weapons you need to have Gold camo on in each weapon class:

  • Assault Rifles: 5
  • Submachine Guns: 5
  • Tactical Rifles: 4
  • Light Machine Guns: 3
  • Sniper Rifles: 3
  • Pistols: 3
  • Shotguns: 2
  • Launchers: 2
  • Melee: 2
  • Special:

Note that there are 10 classes listed. That’s because Special weapons and Melee count as one class. You can also use any weapons within a weapon class to get Gold camo. There were only that many weapons in the game at launch, but since then we have much more, and all of them will contribute to your progress.

How to Unlock Gold Camo

To unlock Gold camo on a weapon you need to first unlock all 35 available Multiplayer camos. Those camos are locked behind a set of challenges. Some of the challenges will be available from the get-go, others will have you leveling up your weapon to get access to them.

Each weapon needs to be leveled up all the way to level 50 to get access to all the camos and challenges. A complete list of challenges can be found further down in this guide as they vary a bit depending on the weapon class.

Tips for Unlocking Dark Matter Ultra in Cold War

Unlocking camos in Hardcore game modes

As you may have noticed already, you are into a lot of playtime when gunning for Dark Matter camo in Cold War. The process may be tedious so here are a few tips & tricks to ease your life up a little.

Play Hardcore Game Modes

One of the first tips for you is to play Hardcore game modes. Hardcore has limited HUD compared to the core game modes but players also have significantly less health. One bullet from an AR to the head is 99% sure to kill the enemy making many challenges easier to complete. For example, Longshots with Assault Rifles. One shot, one kill, and no pain with trying to spray down the enemy from afar.

You can launch Hardcore playlists on the game mode select screen. Go to “Quick Play” and on the top switch from “Core” to “Hardcore”. It has all the same game modes, just with hardcore settings.

Complete Challenges Passively

Lots of challenges can be completed without even looking at them. Eliminations, Headshots, and sometimes even Longshots are kinds of challenges that you will complete passively. So instead, focus on a more complicated challenge like point-blank kills. Have your playstyle and loadout tailored to the difficult challenge, and everything else will take care of its own.

Combine Primary and Secondary Challenges

Do not forget that you will need to complete both Primary and Secondary weapon classes. So make sure to combine both in your loadout. It is a great chance to run an XM4 along with 1911 and get Gold camo on both without wasting too much time.

Run UAV, Field Mic, and Gearhead for Flora Camos

Each weapon class has Flora camos that require a set number of kills of enemies detected, stunned, or blinded, by your Scorestreaks, Equipment, or Field Upgrades. The easiest way to do that is to focus on the “detected” part of the challenge. If you run UAV and a Field Mic, you will constantly have something that will be detecting enemies and contributing to the challenge’s progress. Don’t forget that the Field Mic has a limited range so stay close to it once placed.

UAV is a Scorestreak that can be selected in the “Scorestreaks” tab of your armory. Filed Mic is a Field Upgrade that needs to be customized for each individual loadout. Gearhead perk is in Perk 2 slot and is an important part of earning Flora camos. This perk reduces your Field Upgrade’s cooldown and allows you to carry two Field Upgrades at the same time. Don’t forget to select it in every loadout you will be using for the Dark Matter grind.

Run Launchers With the Engineer perk

Once you get to completing the Launchers weapon class you will soon realize that it is a nightmare. Since it’s a secondary weapon should combine them with other weapons to save time. You should also select the Engineer perk in your Perk 1 slot. Engineer detects enemy equipment and Scorestreaks through walls and shows them on your minimap. A must for Geometric challenges.
