Cross-Play Support for Destiny 2 Accidentally Goes Live Early

Updated:

With the launch of the brand new Season of the Splicer event in Destiny 2, those who wanted to play with people on different platforms were given a sneak peek of cross-play, as it accidentally went live early. According to Bungie, it was not intended to launch this soon.

Players started to notice that they were in matches with people on different platforms throughout the launch of the new season on Tuesday. Players on PC were able to play with Xbox players and PC players were able to team up with those on Stadia.

The feature was announced in anticipation of the Beyond Light expansion, which came out in November of last year. Assistant game director Joe Blackburn announced that cross-play will be introduced into Destiny 2 sometime during season 15. Season of the Splicer is the 14th season, meaning cross-play support is still at least a few months away.

With that said, players who log into Destiny 2 now can get a taste of what cross-play support will look like when it’s eventually fully released. This taste will not last long, however, as Bungie community manager Cozmo announced that cross-play support will be removed later this week.

Despite the accidental early launch, Cozmo encouraged Destiny 2 players to take advantage of the feature before it is removed. Cozmo tweeted “We will be implementing a fix to remove public access later this week, but in the meantime feel free to partake.”

So the cross-play glitch turned into an early playtest of sorts, as Bungie will hopefully learn from the accidental early launch and be more prepared for the real thing in just a few months.
