Cyberattackers Demand 10.5 Million Dollars From Capcom

Published:

A cybercrime group that goes by the name Ragnar Locker has claimed responsibility for a ransomware attack on Capcom, demanding a 1.1 billion yen (10.5 million dollars) payment for approximately 1 TB of stolen data.

This information that has been taken could expose personal information of clients and employees, business information and a sum of confidential files and Non-Disclosure Agreements.

On November 4th, the Osaka based video game developer had announced that it had temporarily shut down its corporate networks due to unauthorized access.

One of the biggest newspapers in Japan, the Asahi Shimbun, has reported that the first to disclose the breach was an anonymous foreigner identifying themselves as a security researcher.

Capcom has declined to offer any details on the attack, stating that the investigation is still in process and that the team is “working to keep the effects to a minimum”.

Capcom has until November 11th to provide an answer

The group has demanded a response from Capcom by November 11th. In light of these news, the Japanese company has already took a hefty hit on the stock market.

The Japanese company is known for series such as Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Mega Man

While it has been more and more frequent the occurrence of cyberattacks on companies through the usage of ransomware, it is rare to see so many details being exposed to the general public.

Comparisons between this cyberattack to the one perpetuated in June against the Honda Motor Company have already been drawn, but the lack of information on that investigation makes it unclear if the two cybercrimes could have been perpetuated by the same group.
