Cyberpunk 2077 is identifiable with its look and style, and what is Cyberpunk without its Cyberware? So where and how did this all start? Let’s look at the history and backstory of Cyberware.
Originally meant for medical reasons and practical purposes, the Cyberware culture has fully expanded and adapted itself into the Cyberpunk lifestyle. From simple upgrades to fashion displays, Cyberware has become an important part of Cyberpunk’s central location, Night City.
What is Cyberware? It is a permanently-installed technology fixed onto a human or human flesh. It is implanting hardware to create an interface that will allow a human’s nervous system to connect with technology. They primarily served to replace or enhance physical capabilities, but now has extended its use and commonality.
Cyberware Backstory: Generation Zero
Back in early 1990s, as the First Central American War continued its path of destruction. The number of American soldiers who came back home maimed and heavily-injured kept on increasing. From simple medical protheses came evolving medical cyberware. As time went by, technology continued to progress and develop with Japan and Germany leading the way. However, these services did not come cheap. Only those who can afford was able to get themselves a new prosthetic arm, even if they didn’t come with fingers and were heavy to wear.
Generation One
Postwar medical cyberware prosthesis development was speeding up the process, making cyberware more efficient to make and use. Reinforced joints and spines for labourers, air filter in lungs for polluted environment workers, and cybernetic enhancements for soldiers and warfare. The 2010s brought in the Industrial Cyberware Revolution.
The US invasions in the Second Central American War were the first to test the new inventions in combat. The Second and Third Corporate Wars also saw these inventions on the field. Militech International Armaments, a megacorporation with bases in every continent, provides and manufactures weapons and military transportations. In the US, Militech enhanced their soldiers with cyberware to create a more reliable connection between its soldiers and systems.
Moving to 2077, an arms race between private armies still continue and thus furthering cyberware development. Most Generation One cyberware can be found among the poor population who are not able to afford the newer inventions.
Generation Two
Generation Two brought even more development with the Cybermedical Market going on the rise. Giant corporations are seeing more and quicker turnarounds in the medical field compared to warfare and combat. However, this does not stop the Cyberweapon development.
As we can see, as time continues to pass in the World of Cyberpunk, the more complicated and complex the Cyberware technology and scene becomes.
