Despite dropping one game, DAMWON Gaming defeated G2 Esports in a very convincing fashion, as they advance to their first Worlds Finals.
DAMWON Gaming vs G2 Esports – Things did not Look Close…
The series already started really badly for the European team. Despite picking up an extremely important Lucian flex pick, DWG rolled over G2 with ease as Canyon completely outmatched Jankos in the jungle matchup. His Hecarim was all over the map, making all types of plays & snowballing his team to victory. Things did not start well for G2 as everything looked like an uphill battle.
G2 managed to get back into the series with a win in Game 2. Pairing the strong Camille + TF duo, they outdid the enemies in the early game, picking up all the drakes & Baron Nashor, ending with a 25-8 kill score in slightly over 33 minutes.
DAMWON Gaming vs G2 Esports – It was Just an Illusion…
With hopes high for an all-out 5 game series, expectations were broken almost immediately. DWG adjusted themselves, especially in the draft. They read G2 very well & answered accordingly with targeted bans & counter picks. With the draft advantage coming out of champ select, the difference between the two teams was even higher. In Game 3, Ghost’s Ashe was untouchable as he carried the team fights with insane DPS. While putting up a good fight, DWG picked up Mountain Soul, making them the perfect counter to G2’s team comp based on burst damage ( Akali, Jhin, Pantheon ).
Even if DWG won Game 3, G2 were still in the game. They had the ability to push it to 5 games. However, G2 Esports dropped the ball really quickly.
The last Game of the series was probably the ultimate stomp in this year’s Worlds. DAMWON Gaming sped run G2, beating them from the first few minutes until the end of the game, which only lasted 19 minutes. The fastest games not only in this year’s Worlds, but in its history.
DWG will play against the winner between Top Esports & Suning at their 1st Worlds Finals appearance. They’re looking more & more like the favorites as they’ve just dropped 2 games in the whole tournament.
G2, on the other hand, will once again leave Worlds with bittersweet memories. They got eliminated once again, this time not by an LPL team, but by a Korean one.
This year’s G2 has been less dominant than the other years, not only in the LEC but also at Worlds. The draft will surely be something to look at: the difference was really felt in that department.
Will there be any changes? While the roster is obviously still top-level, the team’s performance has been lacklustre, with players having inconsistent performance.
