Deep Rock Galactic: How to Get Overclocks

Updated:

Deep Rock Galactic recently released its 34th update, and players returning from the game’s 3-Year-In-Orbit Anniversary event earlier this year might be wondering what they should do next. Miners who have not yet promoted can check out our guide on how to do so. Those who have should be ready for the next step – weapon overclocks. Obtaining them can be a little convoluted though, so here’s how to get weapon overclocks in Deep Rock Galactic.

What are overclocks?

Weapon overclocks are modifications for your weapon which changes the way your weapon performs. There are three types of overclocks.

  • Clean – Grants small benefits with no drawbacks.
  • Balanced – Has a balanced mix of benefits and drawbacks.
  • Unstable – Has significant benefits alongside significant drawbacks.

The type of overclock can be identified by the overclock’s description, as well as the color and shape of the frame surrounding the overclock’s icon.

The most important part about getting overclocks is that you must first have a character that has promoted. Without a promoted character, you will not have access to any of the mechanics that allow you to collect or make overclocks.

Past that, there are four different ways to get overclocks.

  • Assignment: Breach the Core – This assignment will be given upon your first promotion, and it is a series of 9 missions which will yield 3 cosmetics and 3 weapon overclocks.
  • Weekly Core Hunt – A series of 3 missions that refreshes weekly, and yields a cosmetic, a weapon overclock, and a blank matrix core.
  • Deep Dive – A series of 3 missions that must be played back-to-back, each having two primary objectives. These also refresh weekly and give the same rewards as the weekly core hunt.
  • Machine Events – An object that spawns randomly inside normal missions, which, upon player interaction, will provide a challenging event for the player to complete. Upon completion, a blank matrix core can be inserted into the machine to give the player a choice of 3 different overclocks to acquire.

These are all the ways to get overclocks in Deep Rock Galactic. The challenge of the Deep Dives and Machine Events, as well as the random overclock drops and weekly limitations, make overclocks a steep time investment. However, the right overclock will give your weapon a steep upgrade that can help you take on even the hardest missions in the game.
