DayZ is one of the classic multiplayer zombie survival games of the past few years, but can you play it cross-platform with your friends yet?
Does DayZ support Cross platform gameplay?
DayZ is available on a few different platforms, including PC via Steam, as well as both recent PlayStation and Xbox consoles. So with this in mind, if you have say, DayZ on Steam. Can you play with a friend who has DayZ on Xbox one? This is what the term crossplay refers to, where you can play with people using different systems to you.
The answer to this question is, unfortunate as it is, a no.
DayZ does not feature Cross-platform support between the various console or PC versions of the game whatsoever. This means if you want to play with friends, you’ll need to be on the same platform as them, there is simply no way around it. This means that both of you will need to be on Steam or your respective consoles for example.
Some people are generally against crossplay with PC for games on consoles, as PC versions often feature more cheating players. This primarily comes down to being able to access the game files easily on a PC. Though cheaters do make the experience worse for everyone involved, it seems a bit unfair to blame PC players for them. And using them as an argument to undermine cross-platform gameplay simply isn’t smart. Long-term, cross-platform multiplayer features by and large benefit everyone.
Provided the game dev can put the resources into an anti-cheat feature, anyway.
Games that do support cross-platform gameplay result in an easier consumer experience. There’s no need to ask if your friend has DayZ on Steam if you do, you just play the game together. Unfortunately, as DayZ doesn’t support Cross-platform gameplay at the moment, you’ll have to make sure everyone you want to play with has the game on the same platform as you, or multiplayer will simply be out as an option for all of you.
