Golden Joysticks: All Results Recap

The Golden Joysticks were yesterday! Here’s a recap of all the results in case you missed any! The Last of Us 2, Fall Guys, and Death Stranding all feature.

It’s been a fantastic year for gaming, if anything, and the Golden Joysticks is a way of celebrating that. This year it was presented by Games Radar and featured a whopping 24 awards.

Below, we’ve listed all the results in case you missed any! This year’s showcase was hosted by two industry giants, Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey. Both feature in Marvel’s Avengers as Thor and Black Widow respectively, with Laura Bailey also giving a stellar performance in The Last of Us 2.

Best Storytelling Award

The Last of Us 2 picked up this award for it’s interesting narrative structure and killer plot twist!

Best Multiplayer Game Award

Mediatonic’s Fall Guys picked up this award after exploding onto the Party Game scene via Steam and an incredible Ps Plus launch.

Best Visual Design

The Last of Us 2‘s gritty post-apocalyptic world landed it the visual design award at the Golden Joysticks.

Best Game Expansion Award

No Man’s Sky, the game that has been resurrected from the dead, received this award after it got another couple of incredible free content expansions this year.

Mobile Game of the Year

LEGO Builder’s Journey won this award by public vote for it’s ingenious LEGO-based puzzles and intricate virtual dioramas.

Best Audio Award

The Last of Us 2 landed another award thanks to it’s fantastic audio work. GamesRadar sum up this well in the following statement: ” It might not have been a showcase for the most pleasing sounds you’ll hear, but you won’t be forgetting them in a hurry either.”

Best Indie Game Award

Hades picked up the Best Indie Game award, beating Factorio and Kentuky Route Zero. This title offers up a truly unique representation of Greek mythology that has the player fighting to break out of hell as Hades’ son, Zagerus.

Still Playing Award

Minecraft beat PUBG, Apex Legends and Fortnite for the Still Playing Award this year. The blocky sandbox game has proven time-and-time again that it’s simplicity is it’s strong-point.

Studio of the Year Award

Despite claims of crunching leading up to the launch of The Last of Us 2, Naughty Dog have won this year’s Studio of the Year Award. This is arguably the most controversial announcement of the event, with Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, and Respawn all nominated alongside Naughty Dog.

Esports Game of the Year Award

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has landed the Esports Game of the Year Award this year thanks to the explosive success of the CDL and Warzone-based competitive tournaments.

Best New Streamer / Broadcaster Award

This year, iamBrandon has won the Best New Streamer Award by public vote. Primarily a Twitch variety streamer, iamBrandon also works as Reverb Games’ Influencer Relations Manager. Brandon is also behind the creation of Twitch Chicago, a localised support network for creating a Chicago-based Twitch Streamer community.

Best Family Game Award

Fall Guys, interestingly, has won the Best Family Game Award this year despite it lacking local co-operative gameplay. Still, the family-friendly obstacle-course title has proven immensely popular with all ages.

Best Gaming Community Award

Minecraft has won the Best Gaming Community Award. Following the launch of Minecraft Dungeons and the Nether Update for Minecraft, Mojang has proven time and time again that their game is still immensely popular.

Best Performer Award

Sandra Saad has won the Best Performer Award for her portrayal of Kamala Khan in Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avenegers title.

A number of critics agree that Saad’s portrayal of the protagonist is integral to any positives and successes the title has, despite it’s broken gameplay.

Breakthrough Award

Innersloth have won the Breakthrough Award thanks to the immense, and surprising, rise of Among Us. Undoubtedly aided by Streamers, Among Us has risen to become one of the hottest games at the moment.

Outstanding Contribution Award

This year, the Outstanding Contribution Award was shared by the Gaming Industry as a whole due to the various charitable acts that have been carried out across the year. For example, Itch.io’s Bundle For Racial Justice and Equality and EA’s Stay and Play initiative have been mentioned. Also, Gary Whitta received a nod for his creation of Animal Talking in an effort to provide entertainment during the lockdown period.

PC Game of the Year Award

Kojima’s Death Stranding received the PC Game of the Year award, despite not making it’s debut on that platform. It beat Valorant, Half-Life: Alyx, and Microsoft Flight Simulator to the award.

Best Gaming Hardware Award

This year, the NVIDIA RTX 3080 has won the Best Gaming Hardware Award.

PlayStation Game of The Year Award

The Last of Us 2 has picked up this award, continuing it’s successful run of award wins in the Golden Joysticks this year. This marks back-to-back wins for NVIDIA for their Graphics Cards.

Xbox Game of the Year Award

Platformer Ori and the Will of the Wisps has won the Xbox Game of the Year Award. It is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Ori and the Blind Forest, which launched on Xbox in 2015.

Nintendo Game of the Year Award

The immensely popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons picked up the Nintendo Game of the Year Award. It was hotly anticipated by the community and provided the world with the perfectly quaint escapisms it desperately needed in the face of National Lockdowns.

Most Wanted Game Award

Santa Monica Studios’ sequel, God of War: Ragnarok has won the Most Wanted Game Award this year. Following on from 2018’s God of War, little is known about the sequel other than Kratos and Atreus have invited the wrath of Thor onto themselves after their dealings with Modi and Magni.

Critic’s Choice Award

Roguelike indie title Hades has picked up the Critic’s Choice Award this year. It follows Hades’ son in his attempts to escape the underworld ina unique take on Greek Mythology.

Ultimate Game of the Year Award

The Last of Us 2 finishes it’s successful Golden Joysticks ceremony with a win for the Ultimate Game of the Year Award. It beat a whole load of games this year, including: DOOM Eternal, Genshin Impact, Ghost of Tsushima and Crusader Kings 3.
