Grand Theft Auto V has defied all the completely made-up gaming laws I am about to mention. It’s crossed more than one generation, which is Skyrim-levels of amazing, and it’s given the world GTA Online. I’m not going to talk too much about the strangely incredible but horrible experience GTA Online is here. What I am going to talk about, though, is GTA 6.
As soon as people had come to terms with what Grand Theft Auto V was offering, GTA 6 was already in conversation amongst the discourse surrounding the franchise. Sure, people are still playing GTA Online all these years later, but there’s a lot of anticipation around the next title. This has only exploded after the release of the ridiculously-detailed Red Dead Redemption 2. Sure, Red Dead Online has struggled to take-off in the same way… But as a single-player experience, Red Dead Redemption 2 is near-unrivalled.
So, that leaves the world with a lot of questions about GTA 6. Where is it set? When is it coming out? Is it absolutely bat-shit?
Below, we’ll collate everything we know about GTA 6 so far for you to look over. Rumours and Leaks will be tagged accordingly with a source if possible.
GTA 6 Information

GTA 6 Release Date
Currently, there is no official release date information regarding GTA 6. However, given that GTA V took five years to develop and RDR 2 released in 2018, it’s safe to say that GTA 6 could be coming around 2023. ( 04/01/21 )
A Marketing Budget report filed by Take-Two Interactive spikes between April 2023 and March 2024. As GTA‘s publisher, this might signpost the launch period for GTA 6. ( 04/01/21 )
LEAK – Prominent Rockstar Insider, Twitter User Yan2295, has claimed that GTA 6 will not be coming releasing for several years. This contradicts a previous claim made by himself, but coincides with reports from Jason Schreier. ( 04/01/21 )
LEAK – A now-deleted post on Fireden has suggested the following information ( 04/01/21 ):
- Earliest Launch will be holiday 2021, but the game is most likely coming late 2022/early 2023;
GTA 6 Base Information
LEAK – Kotaku have reported that GTA 6, or rather a “new entry into the Grand Theft Auto” series has been in development as of April 2020. The report also suggests that Rockstar might opt for a smaller game at launch which is regularly updated. ( 04/01/21 )
LEAK – A now-deleted Reddit post from u/JackOLantern1982 has suggested the following information ( 04/01/21 ):
- GTA 6 will be a next-gen only title;
- The game is currently in the pre-Alpha stage;
GTA 6 Narrative Details
In terms of settings, London is largely off the cards following an interview with Rockstar Co-founder Dan Houser in 2013. ” I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don’t know if it would be a GTA game.” ( 04/01/21 )
RUMOUR – The website gta6grandtheftauto/.com has suggested that the title could take place across the entirety of the United States, similarly to how The Crew tackled the issue. However, there is little evidence behind this speculation. ( 04/01/21 )
LEAK – A now-deleted Reddit post from u/JackOLantern1982 has suggested the following information ( 04/01/21 ):
- Codename for GTA 6 is PROJECT AMERICAS;
- Primarily set in Vice City and a fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro;
- Rather than taking place in the modern day, it will take place between the 70s and 80s;
- You play as “Ricardo”, a wannabe drug lord who begins the narrative smuggling cocaine between the two major locations;
- Part of the story will take place within a giant prison complex;
- The narrative will feature a chaptered approach similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, with buildings and vehicles changing as time passes;
- Young Martin Madrazo will make an appearance, confirming that the game will be set in the same universe;
- Real-life crises, such as the rise of HIV and the immigration issues of the era, will be discussed alongside appearances of fictional characters based on figures ( ie Fidel Castro);
LEAK – A now-deleted post on Fireden has suggested the following information ( 04/01/21 ):
- GTA 6 will be set in a modern-era Liberty City;
- The opening sequences of the narrative will be reminiscent of The Wire and follow Police Officers attempting to crack down on a drug ring based around a nightclub;
- There will be four main characters, two police officers and two gang members;
- The narrative will also take place in a fictional area reminiscent of Upstate New York, inspired by Ozark and Breaking Bad;
Gameplay Mechanics And Systems
LEAK – A now-deleted Reddit post from u/JackOLantern1982 has suggested the following information ( 04/01/21 ):
- You will only be able to carry two weapons, with your car’s trunk operating similarly to the Saddle in RDR 2;
- There will also be a visible Body Armour system which can be equipped and unequipped;
- Weather systems will be more impactful, with floods and hurricanes featuring;
LEAK – A now-deleted post on Fireden has suggested the following information ( 04/01/21 ):
- Gameplay split between four main characters;
- The “Police Side” of things will play-out similarly to LA Noire, meanwhile the “Gang Side” of things will be more of a sandbox ‘build-a-crime empire’;
Alpha and Beta Information
There is currently no information regarding any Alpha or Beta for the next Grand Theft Auto title. ( 04/01/21 )
