The bomb is a core objective of CS:GO and that includes planting and defusing. You have to know how to play around that objective to get better at the game.
For any new players starting out with Counter-Strike, we’d also recommend learning about the rank system, the basics of shooting (cause it can get tricky), and callouts for different maps.
To defuse the bomb in CS:GO simply hold “E” when close to it. After 10 seconds bomb will be defused. However, there are a few more nuances and tricks when it comes to bombs.
How the Bomb Works in CS:GO
If you are playing on the terrorist side of the map, your job is to get the bomb to a site (A or B) and plant it. Counter-terrorists have to defuse or else it blows up and terrorists win.
The way this works is that the terrorist comes to a bomb site and plants it. Then you have 40 seconds before it is detonated.
As a CT (counter-terrorist) player you have to defuse it. It takes 10 seconds to defuse it which can be cut to 5 seconds if you buy a defuse kit for $400 in the “Equipment” section of the buy menu.
How to Defuse the Bomb in CS:GO
To defuse the bomb, first locate it. Listen to the bomb’s beeping and look for a flashing red light to find it. This is why you always have to make sure your audio settings are in order.
Once you found it, get close and hold the “E” key by default. The progress bar will appear showing how much time is left until you are finished. Hold it until the end and you’ve won yourself the round.
Very important: the progress of the defuse does not save. If a player stops defusing after 8 seconds, they will need to start again from 0.
How to Fake Defuse
A very common technique in higher ranks of CS:GO is faking a defuse. If you are just starting out in CS:GO (or at this point even CS2), you can use it to your advantage to get better at the game and climb higher.
To fake defuse the bomb, come up to it and tap the “E” key. Don’t hold it. It will make the sound that you started defusing the bomb.
The sound will make enemies anxious and they will try to stop you. But since you are not actually defusing the bomb you can pre-aim an angle where you expect the opponents and get some easy kills.
An important thing to consider is how much time you have left. Because even after eliminating enemies you will still need to defuse the bomb to win the round. Having a defuse kit will also affect this.
Also, try to put yourself in the terrorist’s shoes and think about where they can hide. Especially after you cleared a few angles.
How to Ninja Defuse
Another fun technique to use is to try to ninja defuse. It’s a very occasional thing to do and is likely to get you killed, but sometimes it might work.
Usually, if you managed to get to the bomb without enemies noticing you can try and defuse it straight away. Throw smoke on the bomb and maybe a flash to hide the defuse sound and start defusing.
It works best when the enemies are distracted by your teammates or left the site unattended. If anybody is close, it is likely they will just spray through the smoke or throw a grenade to get rid of you.
