How To Drop Spike In Valorant

Updated:

Dropping the Spike in Valorant is an essential mechanic that any player needs to be able to execute in high-pressure situations. The act itself is very simple, but it’s important to be familiar with it so that when it matters most, dropping the spike should be muscle memory.

To equip the Spike as a primary, press 4.

Before being able to drop the spike a player needs to equip it as their primary weapon, this will bring the spike into the player’s hands. (Note: If you do this while on a bomb-site you will attempt to plant the bomb)

Once the spike is equipped, you simply need to press “G” in order to drop it. (Note: When dropped your agent will perform a short throw in the direction you’re aiming and can cover a short distance)

To Recap:

  1. Press 4 to equip the spike in the primary slot
  2. Press G to drop/throw the spike

There are many situations where this can be useful, especially if you play Initiators or Duellists who should never carry the spike as they enter the bomb-site early and could risk dying and giving the enemy information, and perhaps even allowing them to lock the spike down in one location. If this happens it will make the attacker’s job considerably harder!

How To Tell Whether You Have The Spike

Before every round it’s important to take note of who has the spike and to adapt your gameplay accordingly. Usually it’s recommended that Controllers or Sentinels carry the spike as they are NOT the first to enter site and have the utility to control areas of the map.

There are clear signs that you’ve picked up or are carrying the spike: (See Above)

  1. A large pop-up in the centre of the screen “You Have The Spike”
  2. In your weapon inventory in the bottom right corner of the HUD (Heads Up Display) – You will see the Spike by default in Slot 4

Bonus Tip for Brimstone & Viper players: Holding the spike and planting in locations where you know line-ups for post-plant can create a huge advantage in an Attacking round. If you play these agents regularly you should learn at least 1 line-up for each bomb-site.

If you do not have the spike, ask whoever does to plant it in the specific location for your line-up by using pings and voice chat.
