Raft is a massive game full of items to collect and craft, and there’s absolutely no handholding to speak of. You’re on your own in the vast, empty reach of the ocean. If you’re wondering how to get seaweed in Raft, you’re not alone. Fear not, though. We’re here to tell you what the game doesn’t.
To get seaweed in Raft, you first need to find an island. In the reefs around the island, you’ll be able to see seaweed growing in the water. Swim up to it and press E to collect it.
Collecting seaweed in Raft really is that simple. We’re going to break it down a little bit further, though, just in case you want any of the specifics.
How to Get Seaweed in Raft
Step 1: Find an Island
If you’re trying to figure out how to get seaweed in Raft, you have two options:
- Hope you get lucky with a random loot box.
- Harvest it from near an island.
Given that loot box spawns are few and far between, we’re going to be getting our seaweed from an island.
So, step one is actually finding an island. There’s no real rhyme or reason to this, you just have to drift about in the endless expanse until you see one on the horizon. Once you do spot land, you’ll need to navigate your raft over there and set down your anchor.
At this point, you should already have a sail and at least a throwable anchor. without one, getting Seaweed in Raft is going to be a whole lot more difficult. If you don’t have a sail, you’ll need to rely on a paddle to move you toward the island.
And if you’re missing an anchor, then you’re going to be on a timer to get your seaweed as your raft drifts away.
Step 2: Harvest Seaweed
Once you’ve landed on an island, getting your hands on seaweed shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for you. Seaweed spawns in clusters in the reefs around islands. They’re tall enough that you should be able to see them from the island itself, or from your raft, but it’s possible you’ll need to swim down a bit in order to spot them.
The only thing here that might pose an issue is the shark. That’s easily remedied, though, by crafting some shark bait or by leaving your raft far enough from the island that the shark doesn’t follow you over.
Alternatively, you can just speedrun your seaweed collecting. Unlike clay, sand, and metal, seaweed doesn’t need to be broken with your hook. You can just press E to pick it up. So, there’s no delay between finding the seaweed and actually obtaining it.
Step 3: Process Seaweed
Each seaweed stalk yields one piece of seaweed – which is a bit weird but understandable from a balancing point of view. A decently sized island should yield you more than enough to get you started, so it won’t be as bad as with metal and copper.
Once you’ve gotten your seaweed and you’re back on your raft, it’s time to turn it into vine goo. Other than flippers and trash cubes, the only use seaweed has is as vine goo. Vine goo is effectively a glue substitute in a bunch of your mid-game recipes.
To turn your seaweed into vine goo, just smelt it in a smelter. It takes 45 seconds for the smelting process to finish, at which point, you’re done!
