How to Get Water in Subnautica?

Updated:

Drinking water is one of the most necessary resources in the Subnatica universe. The game has a meter that alerts the players about their hydration level and needs to consume drinkable water from time to time to keep themselves hydrated & alive.

Though the game has water everywhere in its surrounding, not every water around you is consumable drinking water. Players must make sure they are drinking safe potable water as consuming unfiltered/dirty water will lead to health complications. In worst-case scenarios, you can even die by consuming unsafe water.

There are various ways through which you can produce clean/drinkable water anywhere. Here is a list of some common as well as unusual ways to create drinking water.

Eating cooked fish

The most common way to stay hydrated in the world of Subnautica is by consuming some cooked fish. Find any fish swimming around you and cook it up in a fabricator. Consuming a fish will increase the water level of a player by three to ten levels depending on the type of fish consumed. Apart from keeping hydrated, consuming cooked fish will also decrease your food cravings.

Making drinking water from Bladderfish

One of the most common fish found in the world of Subnautica is the Bladderfish. Similar to other fishes, bladder fish can be caught & consumed to increase the water levels. But Bladderfish can be used in a better way instead of just eating them. Bladderfish in Subnautica can filter dirty/unfiltered water to safe drinking water. To do this, follow the given steps given below.

  • Catch a couple of Bladderfish floating around you with a Grav Trap.
  • Take the fish to a fabricator in your lifepod or seabase.
  • Convert these into a bottle of filtered water using the water option on the fabricator.
  • Each bottle of water can increase your water levels by +20.

Water-Filtration Machine

You can produce large quantities of drinking water in Subnautica by unlocking the blueprint for the water filtration machine. Each high-quality water bottle in the game made from the filtration machine can provide you with a +50 water level. The only downside of using a filtration machine is that it consumes a lot of energy inside our base.

Producing Disinfected Water

Why worry about normal drinking water? When you can produce disinfected water using simple techniques. To make disinfected water, you need to whip up some bleach in the fabricator. If you don’t know how to make bleach & disinfected water in the game, follow the instructions below.

  • To make bleach, you need two key ingredients salt deposits & coral tube samples.
  • The salt deposits are available in plenty on the bottom of the seabed, particularly beyond the safe shallows into the Grassy Plateaus biomes.
  • The second ingredient can be extracted by just hitting any giant tube corals in safe shallows.
  • Take both the stuff and place it inside a fabricator to convert to bleach pods.
  • Each bleach pod can be further converted into two bottles of disinfected water.

The main advantage of using Disinfected water is that it provides +35 per bottle and is safe to consume.

Consuming Plants

A lot of plants in Subnautica can provide both water and food when consumed. Many plants like Marblemelon, Bulbo Tree & Creepvine can be eaten to increase your water level. You can find the plants around various parts of the ocean, and the better idea is that the majority of the mentioned plants can be farmable. Players can get access to the farmable plant sections after making a trip to the floating Islands.

The main problem of using consumable plants as water sources is that they provide a low amount of water content from +1 to +5, and they also get spoiled pretty soon.
