How To Get XP in Minecraft (9 Best Ways)

Updated:

You may not even notice it from the start but Minecraft has levels. To increase your level you will need XP and here are the best ways to get XP in Minecraft.

XP is the light bubbles that appear when you kill monsters, mine something to smelt, to name a few. That XP will slowly accumulate and increase your level seen below your health.

You can then use those levels to enchant gear at the enchantment table. The higher your level, the better the upgrades will be available for you given that there are enough bookshelves around.

Despite how complicated some may say the XP farm is, it actually narrows down to some of the most basic actions you do in Minecraft. We will go from the easiest methods to getting XP in Minecraft and will go towards the more complicated ones suited for the endgame.

Mining

Mining iron ore

In fact, the easiest and best way to get XP in Minecraft is by going mining. Some ores give you XP instantly others will require smelting. But both are good sources of XP. You will need to mine anyway as it is very difficult to survive without iron at the very least.

There are a few methods you can use to effectively mine and get XP. One would be to go to the mountain biome and mine coal and iron on the surface as there is usually quite a lot of it.

If you don’t have the biome nearby, head underground. Our advice would be to mine 5-10 blocks above Deepslate as it is much slower to get through unless you have very good gear. You will encounter monsters and caves on your way but that shouldn’t slow you down much and can get you extra XP.

Fighting

Fighting monsters at night

Mobs are the main way you can get XP in Minecraft. Every mob drops some XP when killed, but monsters will obviously drop more. So get ready for monster hunting.

The best way to get XP in Minecraft by killing monsters is to simply go out at night and fight everything you see. Gear up and head to an open place. A desert or a plain will do nicely. Avoid any type of forest because you can run yourself into a dead end when escaping or get jumped on by a spider from a tree.

From there on start cautiously fighting monsters. Be constantly aware of your surroundings as new mobs can spawn right behind you. Remember that the amount of mobs spawned also depends on your difficulty settings.

Smelting

After you gather some resources, some will probably require smelting. Smelting items is a good way to gain some XP if you have some good ores from your trip to the mines or some raw food that needs to be cooked.

If you don’t, however, you can smelt other blocks to gain XP. Sand and cobblestone are both good blocks to smelt. They are also quite easy to get. So stack up on a bunch of those and get to smelting.

Although, you will end up with an abundance of glass and stone. You can trade glass with the villagers if you get lucky but all in all, try to plan your building around using both these resources as you don’t want them to go to waste.

Trading

Trading with villagers

In a Minecraft village, you can trade with every villager that has a profession. You can recognize them by the outfits they wear that different form a regular villager.

There are different levels that you can upgrade by trading to open new trades and each trade will get you some XP. Although the amount isn’t huge, it is a good way to get rid of unnecessary items and get something more useful in return.

You can also trade with piglins in the Nether. Piglins do give a good amount of XP and can get you some rare items. But you will need to get some gold beforehand.

Fishing

Regular fishing

Fishing is another good way to not only get XP and food but also rare items and treasure. It is a great way to farm the things you need but it can take a while if you decide to fish manually. It can also be quite tiring to just look at the rod for 30 minutes.

Instead, you can build an AFK fishing farm. There are a few variations of them online. But they revolve around a small build with water and using an auto clicker on your PC to spam right-click. And due to the nature of the build, spamming the right-click will not slow down the fishing process.

Animal Breeding

Cow farm

A good way to start getting XP in the early game of Minecraft is by breeding animals. They are a source of food and useful materials that you will need now or later on in the game.

The best animals to breed would be cows and chickens. Cows are a source of leather that you will need to craft books and then eventually bookshelves to upgrade the enhancement table. And chickens give you feathers to craft arrows for your bow.

Isolate a small area near your house, get the animals in there and use the right food to make more animals. Then eventually, when you have too many, start killing them and harvesting XP and resources. A bit brutal, but efficient.

Spawner Farms

Simple spawner farm to get XP in Minecraft

If you found a spawner while mining, don’t break it, instead try to build the spawner farm around it. It can be an AFK farm or a manual farm if you don’t want to bother too much. Either way, the spawner will be a reliable source of monster drops and XP.

Not all spawners are good though, the best ones are the skeleton spawners, followed by zombies. The spider spawners are the worst because those guys can climb walls and get through small spaces. So we wouldn’t recommend making a farm of those to get XP in Minecraft.

The farm itself is about moving mobs to one place using water. And then either build a mechanism to kill them, or do it yourself. There is a very nice and simple spawner farm for you to get started and you don’t have to make it automated.

Bosses

Ender Dragon is a good one time source of XP in Minecraft

Late in the game, a great option for big chunks of XP is bosses. Both the Ender Dragon and the Wither are the main bosses of the game. Although both can technically be farmed it is quite inefficient. Instead, we suggest you aim to kill each boss once to get a good amount of XP, achievements, and materials.

A smaller “boss” is also the Warden that is spawned in deep dark biomes. The Warden is strong and tanky but you can get technical and build a Warden farm. Otherwise, farming the Warden by yourself is pointless because it drops a measly amount of XP.

There are quite a few ideas available online but those farms are on the advanced level of building.

Advanced Farms and Grinders

Finally, we’ll briefly touch on actual big farms. This is something made for dedicated endgame players and redstone enthusiasts. Those farms may require lots of resources, building, and accuracy.

We are going to leave a video with some of the cool XP farms that you can take a look at and maybe try to replicate in your own world
