Long adventures can quickly become short when you run out of inventory space. Something like a backpack would make sense to have in Minecraft, right?
Unfortunately, the only way for you to get an actual backpack in Minecraft is through mods and addons. In vanilla Minecraft, the closest thing to the backpack is an ender chest.
Backpack Mod for Minecraft Java Edition
For Minecraft Java Edition, you will need to download and install a backpack mod. A classic mod, Useful Backpacks Mod, will do the trick if you want something simple.
There are mod versions for Minecraft 1.12.2 – 1.19.3 and it will require Forge and a U Team Core API to work properly. Both links can be found on the mod page.
Download and install Forge and then drag and drop the Useful Backpacks Mod and U Team Core into the /mods folder found in .minecraft.
With all three installed you can create a new world to start using your backpacks. The very first backpack will require:
- x4 Wool
- x4 Leather
- x1 String
You can then color your backpacks and upgrade them up to two times. The largest backpack in this mod offers 117 inventory slots for you to use.
Backpack Addon for Minecraft Bedrock Edition
For Minecraft Bedrock edition you will need to download an addon (Bedrock version of mods). There are many available but we recommend the Multi Backpack Addon. You can also find backpack addons in the Minecraft marketplace but they will cost you real money.
Had to the page to download a Behaviour Pack and a Resource Pack. Install both by double-clicking on the files and your addon is installed.
Now you need to create a new world and enable packs in the Resource Packs and Behavior Packs settings of the world. Before creating the world, make sure that you have the following experiments enabled: “Holiday Creator Features” and “Creation of Custom Biomes”.
Now you have a bunch of different backpacks that you can make. The simplest one is made out of 8 leather. We will leave the rest for you to discover.
How to Use Ender Chest as a Backpack in Vanilla Minecraft
There is one option to make a “makeshift” backpack in vanilla Minecraft. That is to craft an ender chest. You can craft the ender chest from 8 Obsidian and 1 Eye of Ender.
To use the ender chest like a backpack you will need a pickaxe with a silk touch enchantment. This way, when you break the chest it will drop as a single chest block with all your items inside saving you a ton of space.
This will not work with a regular chest. If you try and break a regular chest with a silk touch tool, all the items will drop on the ground.
