How to Make a Crew in GTA Online

Updated:

GTA Online was created as a multiplayer alternative to the widely popular single-player GTA series. While you can technically play the game alone, you won’t get very far since you’ll encounter well-formed crews in multiplayer lobbies that a solo player is no match for. Besides, having a crew is one of the best ways to enjoy GTA Online with your friends.

The social game is designed to be played in a group. ‘Crews’ are the GTA Online equivalent of ‘clans’ found in the old GTA V game. Being part of a crew in GTA Online can give you extra RP and unlock extra side missions.

But before you go ahead: you’ll need to know how to make a crew in GTA Online. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about forming crews in GTA online and what to look out for.

While Crews are a core aspect of the GTA Online multiplayer game, this isn’t the first time Crews have been introduced. Rockstar Games created Crews back with Max Payne 3’s multiplayer version.

Building a crew involves more than just getting your friends together in a room. You can choose a crew name, colours, and even a logo. Furthermore, each player will carry their crew initials in lobbies.

Here’s how to build a Crew for GTA Online:

  1. All players require a Rockstar Social Club account to be part of a crew. This is also necessary when getting started with your GTA Online account.
  2. Whether you’re playing on a console or PC, travel to PSN/Xbox Live or Rockstar Social Club on your browser and log in. Players must then click on ‘Crews’ in the main menu dropdown.
  3. Click on ‘Create a Crew.’ Here, you’ll be able to establish a brand new crew. You can choose a name and even create a custom hierarchy for the crew members. A custom logo can also be uploaded at this stage.
  4. Character actions for the crew can also be selected. You can choose between ‘The Jerk,’ ‘The Bird,’ ‘Bro Love,’ and ‘Up Yours’ for character gestures and actions.
  5. Now that the crew has been made, multiple players can be invited and added to the crew. Players should now be able to join the game as an entire crew and participate in missions and challenges.

Managing a Crew in GTA Online

While you can create a crew with just your best buds: most crews are far bigger. Running and managing a large crew takes a lot of work and organization, especially since the maximum number of crew members is 1,000.

Every group needs structure: even crews with high street cred. Hierarchies are a great way of establishing order in a crew to manage responsibilities and distinguish new joiners from seasoned members. If custom hierarchy rank titles are not set while creating the crew, the GTA Online default rank titles are set for all crew members.

Here are the default rank titles:

  • 1 – 10: Thug
  • 11 – 20: Hustler
  • 21 – 30: Solder
  • 31 – 40: Trigger
  • 41 – 50: Enforcer
  • 51 – 60: Facilitator
  • 61 – 70: Public Enemy
  • 71 – 80: Shot Caller
  • 81 – 90: Street Boss
  • 91 – 100: Kingpin

Internal Crew Roles

Apart from having hierarchy and titles, the crew leader can assign crew roles to some of the members to help manage the crew.

There are four internal roles in a crew:

  • Commissioners
  • Lieutenants
  • Representatives
  • Muscle

There can be only one leader in every crew, no matter the size. Crew leaders can change internal roles, promoting members based on their loyalty and performance in the crew.

Commissioners have the most power and authority after the crew leader, essentially enjoying all the leader’s privileges.

Lieutenants have special privileges (but not as many as commissioners) that allow them to exert discipline and keep the lower rank members of the crew in check. They prevent any kind of chaos or rebellion within the crew.

Representatives do not have special privileges of leadership but have the authority to help recruit new members into the crew. They can send invites to other players and promote a member of ‘Muscle’ to ‘Representative.’

Muscle members, as the name suggests, only add to the muscle and numbers of the crew but don’t have any special powers or privileges to exert in the group. In time, muscle members can be promoted to higher ranks in internal crew roles. Muscle members can also send crew invites to players but cannot promote any players.

Crew Types and Styles

Each crew serves a different purpose. Selecting your crew’s type and style sets the tone for the kind of game you’ll play and the reputation you’ll leave among other crews. It’s also an important part of establishing early impressions on other rival crews.

There are four different types of crews: Chatterboxes, Thrill Seekers, Rebels, and Soldiers.

Here’s more about each type so you can choose which suits your crew best:

Chatterbox crews spend most of their time in social interactions. This may mean challenging other rival crews or hanging out in social spots like garages and other popular raid locations.

Here relationships with other members are the most important factor in the crew’s success in the game.
Thrill Seeker crews are most likely to get themselves in dangerous and risky stunts, with their focus on creating a scene or getting the highest wanted level.

There’s plenty of opportunity in GTA Online to show off your crew’s taste for danger.
Rebel crews are focused on crime and anarchy. What would GTA be if not a free-for-all, crime-ridden world?

The rebel crews give the good guys a run for their money.
Solider Crews are the most organized and structured crews, working like a well-oiled machine because of their discipline and teamwork.

Instead of wreaking havoc on the streets of Los Santos, these crews clean up the mess and get the job done without shying away from a confrontation.

How to Represent your Crew in GTA Online

Now that you’ve created a crew and have set up a well-established internal hierarchy system: it’s time to take this crew into the GTA world.

The first thing players notice about your crew is your emblem. Rockstar Social has many default logos that can be chosen for a crew emblem, but there’s also an in-built emblem editor which can be used to make a custom emblem.

Custom emblems are a big part of what makes your crew unique. Crew members can also get their emblem printed on their clothes if they are at the right level. To unlock this feature, you may need to complete a job with three or more crew members.

Crew members can also get the emblem tattooed on their bodies to show loyalty to the crew. This costs $19500, and you can only tattoo the crew emblem of which you are currently an active member.

Note: Players are allowed to be a part of five crews at one point, but they can only select one of these as their active crew. This will enable players to choose the crew they are most loyal to where they receive promotions for leadership.

Crew members can also get their crew emblem onto their vehicle.

Crew Member RP

One of the best parts about being in a crew in GTA Online is the bonus RP. For every job that a player completes, they receive a 20% bonus RP if they are in an active crew. Competing in a race or adversary mode along with your crew members only increases RP, providing plenty of incentive to spend time playing with your crew members.

Crew Actions

If you set a crew action for your crew while creating it on Rockstar Social, you’ll be able to witness all of your crew members flipping the bird in perfect synchronicity or thumping their chest in the face of rival crew members. This can usually be seen at the start of firefights with rival squads.

Crews are a great way to take a fun game and make it even more enjoyable, and business Battles are a great way to transfer funds to your crew. Now that you know how to make a crew in GTA Online, here’s how to start a Business Battle.
