How to Make Glass in Minecraft

Published:

One of the first blocks to be added to Minecraft was glass, and it has slowly become one of the most important “staple blocks” for most players. The transparent block of glass allows you to craft valuable items like glass panes, glass bottles, and stained-glass blocks.

If you want to craft a basic uncoloured glass block for the massive utility that it offers, here is a quick guide to help you get started. We will go through the crafting process and list some of the best things you can craft using glass blocks in Minecraft.

What Do You Need to Craft Glass in Minecraft

Here is everything you need to craft one block of uncoloured glass in Minecraft:

  • One sand block
  • One furnace
  • Any furnace fuel source like coal or wood

How to Find Sand Blocks and Build A Furnace

You can get sand blocks by exploring the world, and they typically spawn near water sources. Players only need to find one for each block of glass you want to craft. They can also collect sand and make blocks later by breaking sand blocks by hand. There are no special tools needed for this.

Getting a furnace is a lot trickier. The furnace works as a smelting and cooking device that you can use to build glass blocks. You need a crafting table and eight cobblestones to build a furnace.

If you don’t have a crafting table, simply gather some wooden logs and turn them into wooden planks. Place the logs in your survival inventory and craft your first table by filling each slot with plans in the crafting menu. You are now ready to make glass in Minecraft.

To make glass, you need to place a block of sand in the top cell in the furnace GUI and fill the lower cell with wood, coal or any other fuel.

Wait until the middle of the crafting menu fills up, and you will get your glass block. Drag the block to your inventory, and it will become ready for use.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of the process:

  1. Interact with your furnace to bring up the furnace menu
  2. Place sand in the top furnace slot and put any fuel in the bottom slot. You can choose charcoal, lava buckets and most wood items as fuel.
  3. You can drag the new glass block out of the furnace menu to add it to your inventory.
  4. Alternatively, you can use the glass block and apply dyes to make coloured glass blocks. Simply open the crafting table menu and choose any dye of your choice and surround it with glass blocks. All glass blocks in the crafting menu will be dyed with just one dye.

What is Glass Used for in Minecraft

Glass is one of the most fundamental blocks in the game and can be used for windows in houses or any other type of building. Using glass blocks lets you see through the block and know what’s happening around you, and it can help protect yourself against mobs during the night.

Glass Blocks can also craft valuable items like beacons, glass bottles, glass panes, and daylight sensors. Something to note is that you will usually not be able to break or pick up glass blocks. If you use anything but a silk touch pickaxe, the glass will smash, and you will not receive anything.

Multiple Usage of Glass in Minecraft

Glass Panes

Glass panes are thin vertical blocks that you can use as Windows. If you play the PC version of Minecraft, they are about three squares wide and two squares high. If you do not connect them to anything, they may become invisible, and the textures may become buggy.

Coloured Glass Blocks

Coloured Glass blocks can make coloured glass floors in any building, and Colouring only adds aesthetic value to glass blocks. You can use ink sacs, lapis lazuli, cocoa beans, or bone meal to get dyes.

Glass Bottles and Beacons

Glass bottles and beacons are useful survival items that you can craft using glass. You can store potions or water in glass bottles and have beacons at the ready if you need buffs or light your path.

Glass is a very versatile tool to have in Minecraft. While at first glance, it may look like a decorative block, it can protect you from danger very effectively. Most mobs in the game, including Endermen, cannot see characters through the glass. Creating a greenhouse will keep you safe from most threats during the night.

Its decorative value cannot be ignored either, and you will constantly need glass for various crafting recipes. Feel free to decorate the glass with your favourite dyes, as crafting the glass blocks is relatively cheap compared to other cosmetic items in the game.
