How to Make Money Playing League of Legends

Published:

Many gamers have a dream of making money doing something they love doing (playing games). League of Legends just so happens to be one of the many games you can make money from, so if you’re good at playing LoL and you need some extra cash, you might just be in luck. Today, I’m going to introduce you to some ways you can make money on League of Legends. Afterward, what you do with the knowledge you’re about to receive is entirely up to you.

Ad revenue

When a game is as popular as League of Legends, it isn’t surprising that there will be a demand for online content about it. One of the best ways for you to earn money playing League of Legends would be to start a video channel and then publish content on that channel. Once you have built up a good following, you can start making money with ad revenue. I recommend beginning League-focused content on something like YouTube and Twitch. When it comes to YouTube, the idea is to start making popular content that people will want to take time to watch.  The content you publish on YouTube could include tutorials, champion guides, patch notes, strategy guides, champion introductions (when there’s a new champion), and simple discussions. When it comes to Twitch, it is possible to make money by streaming your League of Legend matches and asking for gifts from subscribers and getting donations. Many Twitch streamers manage to make a good amount of money by streaming games like League of Legends this way, but this is something that takes some work to build up to.

Coaching League of Legends

Believe it or not, there are people out there making a decent amount of money by teaching others their League of Legends skills. Once you reach a certain point to where others are interested in paying you money to show them what they can do in order to improve at League of Legends, you can start making money by playing the game with them, training them, coaching them, and helping them increase their skills. This is similar to how a basketball player would tutor someone and show them how to improve at  shooting hoops.

Streaming League of Legends

You can work your way to making money playing League of Legends by live streaming as you play the game. This is great if you have skill at the game, as others would love to watch you so they could pick up on that skill. Humor and an infectious personality can also help you become a successful streamer.

How much money can you make as a streamer? If you have all your ducks in a row, the sky is the limit. However, in the beginning, you’re only going to earn a little bit of money from broadcasting League of Legends streams.

Take Tyler “Tyler1” Steinkamp as an example of someone who has been successful at making money from streaming League of Legends. His Twitch. The twitch channel has 3.52 million followers, while YouTube has 2.35 million subscribers. Based on these facts, one could assume his net worth to be somewhere around $1 million.

If Tyler did it, so can you. You’ll never know if you don’t try! Go ahead, get started in streaming LoL. Choose a platform that you’re comfortable with, and learn ways to monetize that channel.

Compete in League of Legends tournaments

If you feel that you have some mad skill at League of Legends, then you may want to think about entering yourself into some LoL tournaments. If you look online, you can find contests that you can join – all you have to do is pay your entry fee, and if you manage to beat the other, you will receive the big payout.  Mind you; there isn’t a whole lot of money in online tournaments. If you’re looking to make some real money, that would be in LoL eSports competitions. If you feel you’re good enough to get into eSports competitions, then go for it.

Take a look at Faker for some inspiration. Lee “Faker” Sang Hyeok is thought to be one of the best League of Legends players ever to walk the earth. He has won the Lol World Championship title three times. His winnings from 52 competitions come to a little over $1.25 million. That is on top of Faker’s salary of 2.5 million each year.

Of course, you’re not going to transform yourself into a professional League of Legends player overnight, and there are amateur and professional LoL tournaments you can star in. While the amateur contests have a small prize pool than the major tournaments (those have millions of dollars up for grabs), the amateur tournaments might just be where you should start.

The Main LoL Tournaments:

  • Mid-Season Invitational
  • World Championship
  • All-Star

As of right now (2021), there are a total of twelve professional LoL leagues, with the North American League being the Legends Championship Series (LCS), which is held in Los Angeles every year. If you feel that you have what it takes to win these tournaments, you should jump in there and get going.
