How to Move Building in Stardew Valley

Updated:

Stardew Valley is the game that made running a virtual farm incredibly addicting and fun. This cozy 2D farm game lets you design your farm layout and manage resources. You’d be surprised at how often players design a whole farm before realizing that they didn’t allocate enough space for your crop or cattle. This gaming guide will tell you everything you need to know about how to move a building in Stardew Valley.

Luckily, players don’t have to demolish entire buildings and spend a lot to build them again if they choose the wrong location. It’s easy to understand how to do the task and doesn’t cost you an extra coin.

Here’s how to move a building in Stardew Valley:

Step 1: Find the Carpenter Robin

You’ll need the Carpenter’s help if you want to move a building on your farm. This means you have to find Robin, the only Carpenter in Pelican Town.

  1. Robin can be found in the Carpenter’s shop in Pelican Town. The Carpenter Shop is on a mountain where Robin and her husband live. They live with their children, Maru and Sebastian. Search for the shop/home on the Mountain map, north of Pelican Town. The shop is below Linus’ camp and near the Spa.
  2. The shop is open on most days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in-game time. Most days are key here: there are times when the shop will be closed. You might have to time this correctly in order to meet with Robin. The shop tends to be closed on Tuesdays and closes an hour early on Fridays.
  3. You may not find Robin in her Carpenter shop if she’s already constructing a building on your farm. This means she’s occupied, and you won’t be able to get her to help you move a previously established building.

Step 2: Ask Robin to Help you Move Buildings

Robin will help you move your buildings for free if she’s in her shop and available. Here’s how to ask her to do it:

  1. Walk up to the wooden counter and start a dialogue with Robin. She’ll ask you, “What can I do for you?” after which you get a pop-up menu to select from. This is the part that most players find confusing since there doesn’t seem to be an option for Move Buildings.
  2. You’ll have to select Construct Farm Buildings (even though you don’t want to construct a new building) and then look for five pop-up options on the bottom right of the screen.
  3. The second out of five icons is the ‘Move Buildings’ option. You’ll see it once you hover the mouse over this option. The icon has four arrows pointing to each corner; refer to the image attached above if you cannot find it.
  4. Click on this option. The game now presents an overview of your farm and all the constructed buildings.

Now that you have an overview of your farm, it’s easy enough to relocate any previously constructed buildings.

  1. Click on the building that you wish to move.
  2. The building should convert into a grid of green squares that indicate how much space it takes up. You can now shift it to any other spot on your farm as long as it fits. If the green squares turn to red, it can mean that there isn’t enough space in the area you’re trying to shift it to or that there’s something in the way.
  3. Farm animals can obstruct your way when trying to move a building to a new spot. You can easily solve this problem by getting all your farm animals inside their respective barns and coops before you travel to the Carpenter Shop.
  4. Now you should have successfully moved your building.

Moving buildings don’t cost anything extra, and Robin will do this interaction for you as long as she’s not busy constructing another building on your farm already. Another great thing is that moving buildings happens automatically, so you don’t have to wait for multiple in-game days to go by.

Best Buildings to Construct in Stardew Valley

Now that you know how to move your old buildings in Stardew Valley, you have more room to construct a new one. Constructing buildings is the best way you can convert the hard and barren land into a prosperous, flourishing farm.

There are 16 different kinds of buildings you can construct, including ones that Robin can build and those that have to be built by magic. Here are the best buildings to construct in the game and expand your land.

  • Farmhouse: The first building you’re given in the game is your Farmhouse. This is undoubtedly the most important building to construct in the game since it is where you and your family will stay.
  • Coops: These are some of the most important buildings you need on your farm. There’s no way to keep your farm animals in one place without a coop. Having farm animals roam around the farm can obstruct your path, preventing you from moving around buildings or constructing new ones.
  • Barns: Not all animals can be housed inside a coop. You’ll need to construct barns if you want to keep bigger domestic animals on your farm.
  • Fish Ponds: Since they’re a recent addition, fish Ponds are a sought-after building type for Stardew Valley players.
  • Mills: are a great way to take your raw produce and convert them into sellable goods. They are a great addition to a farm because they take up very little space and have plenty of output to increase your farm’s income.
  • Stable: Watching your character hobble about your farm can be an actual test for your patience. Getting a stable allows your character to ride everywhere on a horse like the true farmer he is.
  • Wells: The whole point of owning a farm is to expand it as you set up multiple income streams. But among all the fishing, farming, and milling space, you might find that the walk back to your Farmhouse is quite tedious.
  • Greenhouse: Just like the Farmhouse, the Greenhouse also comes with the farmland at the beginning of the game and has to be upgraded. The Greenhouse is not open for player access at the beginning of the game and has to be unlocked once you proceed.

There you have it: a complete guide on how to move buildings in Stardew Valley as well as construct new ones on your farm. As your farm expands, you’ll want to expand your family in the Farmhouse as well.
