RazerCon happened the other day, if you missed it. It was a wholly virtual event, amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic, and featured a number of developers alongside Razer. One such developer was The Coalition. One of the more exciting things discussed by The Coalition was the fact that Gabe Diaz was coming to Gears 5.
Gabe Diaz is integral to The Coalition’s next-generation of Gears of War characters. He’s Kait’s father, Oscar’s Brother, and Reyna’s Husband. Gears Tactics is set during the Locust War and features Gabe Diaz as a member of the Engineering Corps and the Coalition of Ordered Governments Army. However, in relation to Gears 5, Gabe was the Chief of the Fort Umson Outsider Village.

The answer to the question “how to unlock Gabe Diaz in Gears 5” is pretty simple. All you need to do is finish the tutorial on Gears Tactics on any platform. It doesn’t even need to be on the newly-released Xbox Console version!
Also, it’s worth noting that Gears Tactics will be added to Game Pass on consoles too, like Gears 5, so it isn’t an impossible task. Even if the turn-based strategy doesn’t interest you.
