League of Legends Gragas – Runes & Summoner Spells
Gragas usually runs Predator as his main keystone. It grants him MS toward enemies while also increasing his damage when landing spells.
Cheap Shot & Eyeball Collection adds more damage output overall, while Ingenious Hunter is extremely important because you can cast Predator more often.

For the second tree, you want to go for Transcendence & Waterwalking: Ability Haste is good for Gragas & Waterwalking is helpful if you want to contest scuttle crabs & fight around objectives. With the new season, Gragas is extremely strong in securing the crabs since his E destroys the shield.

Always run Flash & Smite as a jungler. It’s pretty much the only summoners you will use. Both of them are essential: Smite for jungle camps & ganking, while Flash can be useful for big outplays or tricky situations.
League of Legends Gragas – Build & Skill Order
While gragas can also build tank, in this guide we’re going to explain the full AP build. Gragas has insane burst potential & he can basically obliterate the enemies if played correctly.
You’d want to run either Hextech Rocketbelt or Night Harvester as your main Mythic item. Hextech Rocketbelt allows you go close the gap and chase after enemies while Night Harvester gives an overall higher damage, especially in a teamfight when you can hit multiple people with an ultimate.
Remember also that Mythic items grant bonus stats after fully completing other Legendary so build accordingly to what stats you want to prioritize more. For example, if you don’t plan on building much Ability Haste in your Legendary items, it might be better to compensate that by building Night Harvester.
After that, there are many options for Gragas: Demonic Embrace & Horizon Focus are really good for amplifying your damage, while Zhonya is a good defensive option if you need to survive in a fight. In case of being very fed, rushing Rabadon’s Deathcap makes you an insanely annoying menace to deal with.
Banshee’s Veil is always good thanks to its shield passive. Morellonomicon is worse compared to last year’s version. It’s a situational item that you need if the enemies are stacking a lot of healing. Void staff is extremely effective as well against heavy resistances. Lich’s bane can be situational but it requires you to constantly hit empowered W-auto attacks.
As for boots, Sorcerer’s Shoes are the strongest on Gragas: 18 Magic Penetration, in particular in the early game, is insane value for 1100 gold. In case you’re facing a lot of crowd control, go Mercury’s Treads instead.

The skill order for the barrel-man is somewhat versatile. Maxing Q is however recommended. It’s the spell that allows you to clear faster & deal the most damage. After that, you can either decide between W & E. In most scenarios, maxing E is better since it’s your main engage or disengage spell. At max rank, with high enough Ability Haste, you can dash almost endlessly. Max R whenever you can like always.
During the early stages of the game…
When playing Gragas, your focus will be on clearing to get level 3 as soon as possible and then start ganking around the map. Always go for the scuttle crabs when possible as they boost your EXP a lot. Gragas has insane ganks: both as a initiator or for the follow up. While he’s not the strongest jungler, a couple of kills with the right items can turn him into a oneshot machine…
Then in the mid-to-late game
If you manage to do well in the early game, Gragas will be a terror in the mid-game. With his high base damages and good AP ratios, he can burst down almost any champion if you manage to hit all the combos. Your focus will be hitting an R on multiple targets or using it to make a pick and bounce enemy carries into your team. You can also go for the squishiest target and make sure he’s shutdown before a fight starts. Number advantage is always well accepted in League of Legends so…
Takeaways
Gragas has been around for a very long game. While he was played mostly as a tank in the past, with the old Cinderhulk Enchantment, he’s a lot stronger now as a fully-fledged AP mage.
Despite having a pretty easy & straightforward kit, his combos are harder than you might think. The use of the ultimate requires a certain level of understanding & prediction which is not simple to pull off. Nevertheless, you will be able to get the hang of it pretty quickly if you play him a few games!
