Minecraft Dungeons Tips & Tricks For New Starters

Updated:

Need a hand slaying some Creepers? Here are a couple Minecraft Dungeons Tips to get you started on your block-based dungeon-crawling adventure!

Minecraft Dungeons is the latest entry in Mojang’s Minecraft universe. It’s an isometric dungeon-crawler that offers a fun, combat-focused Minecraft experience. However, without crafting and mining, you need to have your wits about you if you want to make it out of the randomly-generated dungeons alive!

Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks One

Watch Your Arrow Count!

Unlike Minecraft, ranged combat is vital in Minecraft Dungeons. It keeps the hordes at bay and allows you to tackle any ranged mobs that are out of reach. There are a whole host of ranged weapons available, too. Aside from standard bows, each weapon differs slightly to help you tweak your loadout to suit your playstyle.

Longbows do a little more damage and offer you the opportunity to charge up shots to pack a punch against tougher enemies. However, they do fire slower, so they’re not as helpful when facing an onslaught. Slimes, for example, who multiply, might prove problematic.

Crossbows, on the other hand, fire much more rapidly at a lower damage threshold. Like the standard bow, they’re great for regular mobs but you’ll find you use a lot more ammunition against larger opponents.

That’s where Minecraft Dungeons Tips And Tricks One is important: you have to watch your arrow count.

I went into one level with 126 arrows. That’s one-two-six. In a regular Minecraft game, you’d think that is more than enough. But, here…

With Minecraft Dungeons focused much more on combat and dungeon-crawling, there are almost always at least 5 mobs on screen. A lot of these might only take one arrow each to kill, but bigger mobs and bosses will take 20, 30, or even more! Arrows are mainly found in Supply Chests but do sometimes drop when you defeat a stronger mob. The Supply Chests don’t pop up a lot, usually once or twice a level, and they don’t drop a lot, so it’s vital that you pick up any arrows that you can find. They may get lost amongst the chaos in a boss fight, so make sure you keep an eye out. They don’t take up inventory space, either, so there’s no reason not to keep stocked up!

Minecraft Dungeons Tips And Tricks Two

Don’t Be Afraid To Use Your Health Potion!

Alright, so you have a lot of arrows at your disposal. That’s good, but they’re useless if you aren’t alive to use them! There is a lot of stuff out there that can deal damage to you, and it’s vital that you stay at full health as much as you can, especially when boss fights and mob spawners can pop up at any time!

Amongst the Zombies, Skeletons, Slimes, and Spiders you defeat, you’ll be able to find food. Bread and apples, pork chops… Minecraft food. Most of the time, along with a small health boost, it offers increased health regeneration. This might offer you a bit of respite between flashpoints, but this won’t save you during a boss fight.

This is where Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Two comes into play. Don’t be afraid to use your health potion!

Unlike potions in Minecraft, the health potion you have in Minecraft Dungeons has a cooldown period. That means unlimited health potions! You don’t have to find more, so don’t be afraid to use it when you need it. Each time you level up, it’ll give you more health back per use, too!

The one problem that you face, though, is that you only have the one use before you need to wait for the cooldown. This makes timing vital. However, I found that anything below 50% was usually a good time to use it. By the time you get hit again, you’ll be on your way to having another charge ready to go!

Minecraft Dungeons Tips And Tricks Three

Sometimes Weaker Is Stronger!

Having full health is great, but you also need to make sure you have the right armour to suit your playstyle. Minecraft Dungeons takes blocky armour to the next level! If you’ve played Minecraft Story Mode, you’ll be more familiar with it, but if not… You’re in for a treat.

Minecraft Dungeons has several different types of armour available to players; each type offers up a different range of bonuses on top of the standard armour rating. This is where a degree of strategy comes into play. If you favour ranged combat, you’ll need to make sure the bonuses of your armour reflect that. Likewise, you’ll need to make sure that you’ve got an armour equipped that gives you a melee bonus if you prefer to hack-and-slash!

Minecraft Dungeons Tips
In-Game Armour will look something like this. Each type has it’s own bonuses!

So here’s Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Three: Sometimes Weaker is Stronger. Don’t get me wrong; I would make sure that you’re looking for higher armour ratings when picking your protection. However… Sometimes going for an armour rating one, or two, below the highest one you have in your inventory might be the best option.

It is also important to look at the enchantments each armour offers. You may have one that is a bit weaker while offering Deflect. Deflect, when upgraded, increases the chance of deflecting projectiles. This, although weaker, may just save your life.

Minecraft Dungeons Tips And Tricks Four

Watch Out For Edges!

Alright, you’re all ready to fight. You’ve got enough arrows to keep the  hordes at bay. You’re making sure that your health is topped up, and you’re basically arrow-proof. But even then, you’re getting a bit overwhelmed. So… You decide to start dodging and rolling. This is all well-and-good until you hit a crowded bridge. If you dodge roll in the wrong direction, you’ll find yourself in a bit of trouble.

That’s right… Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Four: Watch Out For Edges!

Minecraft Dungeons isn’t one of those games that has helpful invisible walls to stop you plummeting to your death. Much like Minecraft, if you fall from a height… You take damage. Minecraft Dungeons does this by taking a chunk of health and spawning you back on top. However, if you do this too much or at the wrong time, you’ll find yourself in a lot of trouble, so be careful of edges and roll responsibly!

Make sure, along with defensive enchantments, you’re looking out for enchantments that will improve your dodge roll. There are some that offer lightning attacks, and some that offer speed boosts. These may appear secondary but are well worth your attention!

Minecraft Dungeons Tips And Tricks Five

Salvage, Salvage, Salvage. Salvage, again.

Now that you’ve mastered the Dodge Roll, or you’re practicing, you’re ready to carry on dungeoneering. Through your perilous travels, you’ll come across a lot of loot. Some of it might be good, but a lot of it will be a little average. Thankfully, there’s a way you can profit from this.

Throughout your travels, you’ll collect Emeralds along with your loot. After the first level, a friendly Blacksmith will pop up by your camp. From him, you can trade Emeralds for a random bit of loot. A lot of these are sub-par, but every now and then you’ll bag a steal! But what do you do with all the sub-par loot?

Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Five: Salvage, Salvage, Salvage. Salvage, again. If you check out something in your inventory you don’t enjoy, then don’t let it just sit there! If you look to the right, you’ll see a little Salvage button. With this, you can destroy the item and get a few Emeralds. These can build up pretty quickly, and it is vitally important that you’re prepared for whatever the Creeper Cave or Soggy Swamp will throw at you.

Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Six

Watch Out For The Explosion Radius!

One thing that is great for getting you out of a jam is an explosion. Minecraft Dungeons is no different! Explosions are great at dealing a lot of damage, hitting multiple mobs at once, and clearing out a tight space with it’s knockback.

Explosions can come in a variety of forms. Weapon enchantments and special items such as the Firework Arrow are the most common form of this. Most of the time, you won’t take any damage from these explosions. However, there are some which can prove lethal. TNT and Creepers are the two you have to worry for.

TNT pops up as a random loot drop and is probably the best explosive I have come across so far. It does a block-load of damage but its radius is massive. This is where you need to be careful.

Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Six: Watch Out For The Explosion Radius! With TNT, you pick it up and throw it in place of your ranged attack. What makes it different is that you throw it on the location you click, as opposed to firing an arrow in that direction. Therefore, if you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself being hit with a hefty amount of damage.

You can see the explosion radius, thankfully, but amongst the chaos, one can easily be caught in it. Not to mention that you might be running into more trouble than the TNT if you haven’t got your wits about you!

Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Seven

Hit Tougher Mobs First!

You’ve nearly got all the basics down. You’re stocked and stacked, with armour to compliment your play-style perfectly. Now, all you have to do is make sure you’re dealing with the mobs the right way.

One thing to look out for is which mobs are worth hitting first. A lot of the basic mobs only take one or two hits to kill, thankfully. However, they’re not all this easy. In Minecraft Dungeons, you’ll come up against a variety of armoured mobs and specialist Illagers. Against these, you’ll need to make sure you’re employing the right strategies, otherwise you may get caught out!

So, you’ll need to make sure you’re following Minecraft Dungeons Tips and Tricks Seven: Hit Tougher Mobs First!

One thing that’s important (aside from wearing down the armoured mobs) is looking out for the Wizards and Witches. These are not only tougher than your average Illager but they also spend their time offering buffs to the others. Taking them out first is vital in leveling the playing field for you and your companions. There are plenty other special enemies to keep an eye on, but if you make sure your party is ready to focus on the tougher opponents, you’ll be fine!

Not only this, but mob spawners should be at the top of your list. As you might imagine, if you don’t deal with these quickly, you’ll find yourself letting a tackle-able problem escalate into one that you may not make it out of!

There’s a surprising amount of strategy and a certain degree of skill required to succeed in Minecraft Dungeons, despite its appearance. Hopefully, these tips and tricks will help you take on the Arch-Illager and dungeoneer your way to victory!
