Updated:
Minecraft

Below, we’re going to dive deep into everything about sponges and everything related to them in our Minecraft: Sponge Guide.

Sponges in Minecraft can be very useful, but they must be forged. A Sponge is a block that can remove water around it after it is placed, turning into a wet Sponge.

Minecraft Sponge Harvesting and Inventory Info

Sponges are not renewable but can be stacked in your inventory, up to 64.

Blast resistance and hardness of a Sponge block is 0.6.

Sponges are not flammable so they can’t catch fire from contact with lava. They are also not transparent, nor are they luminant.

How and Where to Obtain Sponge in Minecraft

There are two types of Sponges: wet and dry.

Either type of Sponge can be mined by hand, or with any harvesting tool but hoes will break the fastest when harvesting sponges.

Below are breaking times, measured in seconds, for specified materials:

  • Default – 0.9
  • Wooden – 0.45
  • Stone – 0.25
  • Iron – 0.15
  • Diamond – 0.15
  • Netherite – 0.1
  • Golden – 0.1

Times listed above are are enchanted tools wielded by players with no status effects.

Wet Sponges can be obtained by defeated an Elder Guardian.

You can find Sponges in mass by visiting a Ocean Monument as they generate naturally in “Sponge rooms” where you can find up to 30 at once.

By smelting a wet Sponge with a furnace it may be used again. A recipe is required for smelting but it is quite simple and takes no time at all. The recipe description is as follows:

“If a bucket is in the fuel slot at the time the sponge completes its drying, the water drains into the bucket, leaving a bucket of water in the fuel slot. Otherwise, the water just evaporates.”

Minecraft Sponge Guide: Smelting Recipe Description

Similar to a smelting but less work and less reward, placing a wet Sponge in the Nether will dry up instantly, turning into a normal Sponge. Similarly, placing a wet Sponge in any dry biome within Overworld will also dry instantly becoming a normal Sponge.

Ways to Use Your Newly Obtained Sponge

A Sponge can be placed by facing the water tile you wish to place it on and it will absorb the water. It will absorb all water in comes in contact with but once it becomes full it will stop absorbing.

Also, it absorbs water out to a taxicab geometry of 7 but the Sponge will not absorb more than 65 blocks of water.

When a Sponge is wet it will emit war particles on its surface reflecting it is a wet Sponge, not dry.

Minecraft: Sponge Guide Achievements and Trophy Information
