The grand-finals for the Road to Rio Europe qualifier saw Astralis dominate the series, winning the first two maps to win the series 3:0.
Astralis were up one map coming into the series as they had made their way to the grand-finals through the upper-bracket without losing. During the grand-finals, they were able to dismantle G2, winning Nuke 16:6 and then Vertigo 16:2.
Road to Rio Europe – Group stages
The group stages were filled with upsets, and some of the teams that would have certainly been expected to make it to the playoffs did not. The nature of online play, unfortunately, increases the likelihood of these upsets occurring. Regardless of the circumstances, teams like Mousesports and Fnatic will be disappointed with their performances.
Faze were undefeated through the course of the group stages, showing uncharacteristic levels of consistency. Astralis were also able to dominate their group, only losing one match in the group stages versus Fnatic.
Teams like Heretics and GODSENT have been capitalizing on the switch to online play and have been able to win matches against much higher-ranked teams, each of these teams managing to place fourth in their respective group.
Road to Rio Europe – Playoffs
The upper-bracket of the playoffs proceeded much as you would have expected, with Astralis maintaining their dominance throughout the event. After making it to the playoffs, North were defeated by Heretics in the lower bracket, but they were using their coach as a stand-in.
After their strong performances in the group stages, Faze might have been expected to make it to the grand-finals for a rematch against Astralis, but G2 were able to win the series 2:1.
Astralis secured 1600 RMR points and $33,000 for placing first, with G2 winning 1500 RMR points and $21,500 for second place.
