Jagex has announced a partnership with Steamforged Games in order to “create a board game and tabletop roleplaying game core book inspired by RuneScape’s rich fantasy world of Gielinor.” Both games will be making their debut in 2022, with a Kickstarter for the board game and the RuneScape tabletop going straight to stores.

Ever since its release in 2001, RuneScape has been exclusively digitally when it comes to games. The board game will playable by one to five players and will involve quest-based campaigns through Gielinor, the realm that RuneScape is primarily set it.

Like in the video game, players will craft and upgrade equipment, level up their characters, cook recipes, engage with NPCs, and test their skills while exploring different regions of the world. A variety of side quests will also help with the immersion of experience.

Meanwhile, the TTRPG will “onsist of a lavishly illustrated, hardback core book containing rules for players to run a RuneScape tabletop roleplaying game, in which they can build their own characters, explore Gielinor, and create unique and exciting quests. The TTRPG core book is also fully compatible with the fifth edition ruleset of the world’s favourite roleplaying tabletop game.”

“After more than 21 years of being exclusively available digitally, it’s extremely exciting to be collaborating with Steamforged to create and deliver new RuneScape role-playing adventures to tabletop gamers. By launching the board game via a crowdfunding platform, Steamforged is mirroring our approach of involving the RuneScape communities in taking the game to tabletop. Given Steamforged’s experience and expertise in transforming video game experiences to tabletop, I’m sure that both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape players will be excited to get their hands on the planned miniatures to create their own adventures with other ’Scapers and board gamers”.

Phil Mansell, CEO of Jagex

Steamforged is known for adapting video games for tabletop, and RuneScape will be their twelfth one. Their past projects include the Monster Hunter: World and Dark Souls – The Board Game.
