When Nintendo announced that a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter was going to be revealed at the 2020 Game Awards, fans were clamouring on who they thought who it would be, with guesses ranging from Sora, to Crash, to even Jonesy. With the reveal of Sephiroth for Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Nintendo has proven to be unpredictable with its choices for the Fighter’s Pass.

Many fans didn’t expect a second Final Fantasy character, as many believed Square Enix to be iffy with the series, supported by the fact that Final Fantasy only has two music tracks in Ultimate. It is also unprecedented for a third party series in Ultimate to have two unique playable characters (Castlevania is the only represented franchise to have two characters, Simon and Richter, but they are echo fighters).

Sephiroth’s reveal brought massive [Final Fantasy] fanfare among the Smash Community, with many voicing their excitement and disbelief. The CGI trailer was also met with positive reaction with some mentioning how it reminded them to Advent Children.

Hailing from Final Fantasy VII, some Sephiroth gameplay has been shown in the reveal trailer, however Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director, Masahiro Sakurai, will be showing us an in-depth look at how Sephiroth plays in an upcoming video, scheduled for Friday, December 18th.

Sephiroth also makes his way into the panoramic shot of all the fighters

Smash competitive players have already begun analyzing Sephiroth’s moveset prior to his detailed gameplay reveal, with Mew2King offering up his thoughts on the character, emphasizing the reach of Sephiroth’s blade. Sephiroth also possess a unique fighter ability to unfurl his wing, which appears to alter some of his moves.

Sephiroth will be available sometime after the presentation for those who purchase his pack. Those who already own the Fighter’s Pass Vol. 2 will have him unlocked upon release.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is also available for PlayStation 4 for those interested in the game Sephiroth is from.
