Sony Japan Announces It’s Stopping Production On Some Playstation 4 Models

Sony Japan has reportedly announced that it will end production of all Playstation 4 Pro models and all but one Playstation 4 Slim model. This has been done in an attempt to increase production of the Playstation 5. Let’s take a look what that could mean for the console’s future.

According to GameWatch reports that Sony has discontinued all models of the Playstation 4 Pro (CUH-7000), and all but one model of PS4 Slim (CUH-2000). The only PS4 that will remain in production is the 500GB Jet Black slim design.

This move has been made to step up production for their recently released Playstation 5 which have seen major stock shortages since it’s launch on November 12. This isn’t the most surprising move as Playstation 4 already has an established install base and if the demand for Playstation 5 is to be met certain measures have to be taken in order for the supply to match.

Users on twitter pointed out that distribution outlets have already started putting up signs stating that they will no longer be restocking the products due to the manufacturer ending production.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the end for the Playstation 4 though, it has been in circulation since 2013. It should still be possible to acquire for a while but this will depend on how many distributors and third party websites have to hand. Worst comes to worst buying second might be an option. Sony is simply announcing they are no longer making new copies.

The console will also still continue to function and receive new games along with its newer version. Horizon Forbidden west, Hogwarts Legacy and Hitman 3 are all still receiving a version for the PS4. Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan has also stated that it is crucial they keep supporting PS4 owners for years to come with current plans to keep making games for the system until 2022.

What are your thoughts on Sony’s plans to stop production? Are you planning on buying a Playstation 5 once stock becomes available or were you lucky enough to snag one earlier?
