It’s official. StarCraft 2 content support is finally ending. Blizzard announced the news earlier in the week. This doesn’t mean the game is dead… But, now it is all dependent on the avid fanbase it has accrued over the years.
In an official update to StarCraft 2‘s website, Executive Producer Rob Bridenbecker clarified what the news of the end to StarCraft 2′s content support meant for the title.

Thankfully, it isn’t all bad news! One of the first points Bridenbecker makes is that the original StarCraft title was being supported well-over ten years after its’ release. Therefore, in a similar vien, Blizzard plan to continue supporting StarCraft 2 to a degree for the foreseeable future.
“We’re going to continue supporting StarCraft II in the same manner as we have with our previous longstanding games, such as Brood War, focusing primarily on what our core and competitive communities care about most. What this means is that we’re not going to be producing additional for-purchase content, such as Commanders and War Chests, but we will continue doing season rolls and necessary balance fixes moving forward.”

StarCraft 2 Content Support Will Not Affect Esports
Continuing on, Bridenbecker made sure fans were aware of the following:
” StarCraft II esports, which is part of the highest echelon of professional competitive gaming, will also continue going strong as it has been through our partners ESL Gaming and GSL.”
Fans of the StarCraft universe will undoubtedly be saddened by the news, however, this does mean that a new project set in this world could be on it’s way… Bridenbecker himself states that this will “free [them] up to think about what’s next”. What would you want to see from the next StarCraft game? Another RTS, or maybe an exploration into other genres or formats?
