What is a greenhouse?
The greenhouse is a glass building that is included on your plot of land from the get-go.
The structure is designed to protect crops and fruit trees from adverse weather conditions and temperatures that could be harmful to the produce. This means that everything you plant within the greenhouse will live to its full potential and remain unaffected by seasonal changes.
How to repair the greenhouse
The first step to getting your dream greenhouse is to repair the one that sits on your farmland.
When you first arrive, the greenhouse is badly damaged and unusable, but there are a few steps you can complete that will fix it up in no time.
You can either complete all of the Pantry bundles for the Community Center, or you can purchase a repair from the Joja Community Development Projects for 35,000 Gold.
Once the greenhouse has been repaired, you can then move it to your desired location by visiting the carpenter’s shop.
The best crops to grow in your greenhouse
Once your greenhouse is as good as new, you can then begin filling it with crops and fruit trees.
There are a variety of crops that can be planted, and the following list highlights the best crops to plant and where to find the seeds.
Mixed Seed
These seeds offer a blind array of produce, including corn, peppers and wheat. Mixed Seeds can be found by cutting weeds, mining and digging and can be very profitable depending on what grows from them.
Blueberries
A few blueberry bushes provide hundreds of fruit at harvest and take thirteen days to grow to its full potential. Seeds can be bought at Pierre’s for 80 Gold.
Cranberries
Similar to blueberries, you can get a lot of cranberries out of a few bushes, but they take half the time to grow when compared to blueberries. Seeds can be purchased from Pierre’s for 240 Gold or the JojaMart for 300 Gold.
Pineapple
Pineapples take around seven days to regrow, and the seeds cost 1 Magma Cup from the Island Trader. You can also find seeds inside Golden Coconuts or by slaying the monsters in the Volcano Dungeon.
Giant crops
Firstly, giant crops take up around six crop spaces (3×3 square) to grow, and the produce includes melons, pumpkins and cauliflower. Melon and cauliflower seeds can be bought at Pierre’s for 80 Gold each and 100 Gold at the JojaMart. Pumpkin seeds cost a little more at 100 Gold and 125 Gold.
Corn
Corn is one of the more popular forms of produce and a must-have for your greenhouse. Seeds can be found at Pierre’s for 150 Gold or the JojaMart for 187 Gold.
Coffee
Coffee seeds are guaranteed to have a long, healthy and practically immortal life if planted within the greenhouse. Seeds can usually be found dropped by Dust Sprites in the Mines, and the Traveling Cart will also sell them for between 100 Gold and 1000 Gold.
Starfruit
Starfruit is a rarer crop that usually sells for a very high price. Seeds can be bought for 400 Gold at the Oasis.
Cactus fruit
These fruits require a hot climate to grow, making the greenhouse the perfect place for them. Seeds can be purchased for 150 Gold at the Oasis in Calico Desert.
Sweet gem berries
These berries sell for around 3000 Gold in their poorest form, making them a great asset for your greenhouse. Seeds can be bought for 1000 Gold from the Traveling Cart.
Ancient fruit
This type of fruit is one of the more lucrative forms of produce in-game, but takes around a month to grow. Seeds can be obtained from Gunther after you donate the artifact of the same name.
Fruit Trees
Lastly, various fruit trees can be planted around your greenhouse which will maximize your profits greatly. Apple seeds cost 4000 Gold, cherry costs 3400 Gold, apricot costs 2000 Gold, orange costs 4000 Gold, peach costs 6000 Gold and pomegranate costs 6000 Gold. All saplings can be bought from Pierre’s.
The best greenhouse layout in Stardew Valley
The greenhouse layout is made up of a 10 row by 12 column plot, and only 7×6 are available for growing crops. With this limited space in mind, it’s imperative to design your greenhouse layout beforehand.
Watering each plant is a daily chore, which makes the addition of sprinklers a necessity. Sprinklers only use up one crop space each, and around 4 to 6 sprinklers are recommended for the plot.
Sprinklers can be positioned at the inside corners of each 4×4 square, or if you opt for 6, they can be placed in a row every 4×4 square.
It may not look like it, but you can actually grow fruit trees on the outside of your plot where the tiles are. Four fruit trees can be planted at the top and bottom as well as four on each side. Each tree should have about two tiles between them.
By planting fruit trees on the outside, this allows you to allocate all of your plot space to the crops, and is a tried and tested greenhouse layout in Stardew Valley.
