Having trouble figuring out how to use tackle and which is best in Stardew Valley? This guide is for you!

In Stardew Valley, in addition to fishing baits, it’s possible to use tackle while fishing. There are many different tackles and, when attached to a rod, they have different effects.

The Right Rod

Although there are four different rods in Stardew Valley, the only one that can have a tackle attached is the iridium rod. The iridium rod can be purchased at Willy’s Fishing Shop for 7,500g. However, it will only be available after the player reaches level 6 of fishing.

How to Attach the Tackle

Attaching the tackle to your rod is exactly like attaching bait.

  • On the computer, to attach the tackle, you have to open your Inventory Screen. It doesn’t work in the Toolbar. Then, you have to left-click or right-click on the tackle. After that, all you have to do is right-click on the fishing rod.
  • On PS4, press X or square on the tackle, then press square to attach the tackle to the rod.
  • On Xbox, press A or X to pick up the tackle, then X to attach to the rod.
  • On Nintendo Switch, press A or Y on the tackle, then Y to attach to the rod.
  • On mobile, open your Inventory Screen, then drag the tackle and drop it on top of the rod.

The Best Tackle

All the tackles can be bought at Willy’s or crafted with the right resources. However, you can just use one tackle at a time, so choose wisely.

If you have difficulty catching fish, the Trap Bobber or the Cork Bobber are both good tackles to use. The first one makes the “catching” bar decreases 66% slower while the second slightly increases the size of your “fishing bar”.

The best tackle, and expensive one, is the Barbed Hook since it makes your fishing bar ‘cling’ to the fish, automatically going up or down to try to stay in the middle of the fish. However, although you can still manually control the bar, it’s rather difficult, especially with slower fish.
