‘Stay home. Save lives’ Coming to a Game Near You

Stay home. Save lives

The ‘Stay home. Save lives’ campaign is getting a little help propagating thanks to several prominent game developers. If you are unfamiliar with this campaign, the goal is to remind people of their social obligation to stay home during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Doing so will help slow the spread of the disease and undoubtedly save countless lives.

A large number of UK game studios have been invited by the DCMS to take part in helping to drive the campaign to gamers. So far, large studios such as Codemasters, Rebellion, and Activision-Blizzard have joined in.

The studios involved are taking different approaches to how they include the message in their game. Codemasters is placing ads on in-game banners in their popular racing series DiRT Rally 2.0. Rebellion is, on the other hand, providing a more traditional advertisement screen before you can play their Sniper Elite games.

The word “advertisement” gets thrown around a lot when discussing how developers are implementing the campaign, but I see it as information dissemination and awareness. For instance, the screen that pops up before the game in Sniper Elite provides a link for PC players to get more information.

With much of the world stuck at home, and millions playing games, this move is some seriously good thinking by the DCMS. I can only hope more studios get on board.

If you are one of our many non-UK readers, you may notice the campaign is not showing up in your game. The ‘Stay home. Save lives’ campaign is UK focused, and will only show up to UK players. With 37 million gamers in the UK, that is still substantial reach.

We at Gamezo also urge you to stay home and save lives. If you would like to read our stance on COVID-19, you can read that here.
