The iconic Marvel Studios villain, Thanos, returns to Fortnite as a skin players can unlock for free, assuming they are good enough.
Epic Games announced on Friday that all players can unlock Thanos as a skin through a limited-time event, called the Thanos Cup. In the Thanos Cup, teams have to complete up to ten matches and accumulate as many points as possible. The top team in each region that competes will receive the skin. Additionally, all teams that accumulate eight points will receive the “Thanos Watches!” spray.
The official statement from Epic Games reads “Grab your Duos partner and compete in up to 10 total matches in 3 hours to earn as many points as you can. The top-performing teams in each region will earn the Thanos Outfit and Back Bling inspired by Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame. For anyone who earns 8 total points, you’ll receive the “Thanos Watches!” Spray.”
Additionally, players will need to be level 30 in their overall Epic Games account and have two-factor authentication on in order to compete.
Epic has held tournaments like this in the past. About two months ago, they did a similar thing to Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn, which you can read about here.
For those who cannot compete in the tournament or think they aren’t good enough to be the top team, a Thanos bundle will arrive in the item shop a few days later. Once in the shop, players will have access to looking like the Mad Titan, complete with his gold armour and a fully decked out, but powerless, Infinity Gauntlet.
The last time Thanos was in Fortnite was to celebrate the release of Avengers: Infinity War. Unlike other Marvel characters that have appeared in the game, Thanos was limited to just being a powerup that gave whoever had him a ridiculous powerset, thanks to the Infinity Gauntlet. Now, Thanos is depowered and can be worn by anyone.
For those who cannot wait to be the Mad Titan in Fortnite, you won’t have to wait long as the Thanos Cup starts on June 21st and the item bundle will arrive in the item shop on June June 26th at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. Full rules and official statement from Epic Games.
