Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown Announced for PS4

Published:

After 9 years, Virtua Fighter is finally back. SEGA announced today that Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will be released next Tuesday, June 1. VF5 Ultimate Showdown will be a PS4 exclusive.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will be an HD remake of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, originally released in Japanese arcades in 2010, and later for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, in 2012. VF5 Ultimate Showdown is being developed alongside the Ryu Ga Gotoku team, a development studio associated with SEGA that develops the Yakuza franchise.

Thanks to the collaboration with the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, VF5 Ultimate Showdown will be more than just a simple HD remaster. Instead, it will be a full remake from the ground up, using the Yakuza franchise’s Dragon Engine, first seen in Yakuza 6. It’s fitting that the remake is being made in collaboration with the Yakuza team, as the only way to currently play Virtua Fighter 5 on current-gen consoles is through the in-game arcades in Yakuza 6 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

The announcement and trailer came by way of IGN, who posted this trailer, and the accompanying message.
