Why Does GTA 5 Have 2 Discs?

Updated:

Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most successful games of all time, absolutely smashing sales records with its 2013 release. But exactly why does GTA 5 have two discs?

While it’s not uncommon, you may be puzzled to find GTA 5 having two discs when it comes to the Xbox versions of the game.

Why Does GTA 5 Have 2 Discs?

The first disc holds 7.7GB of required data for Grand Theft Auto 5, which you must install before playing. You use the second disk to launch and play the game.

Developers Rockstar Games announced before launch that the Xbox 360 edition of Grand Theft Auto 5 will have two separate discs. Both discs are absolutely mandatory to play.

It’s unclear exactly why Grand Theft Auto 5 requires two discs on Xbox platforms. Although, with data running from both the disc and the HDD, it’s believed to help the game run smoother and achieve optimal streaming.

Forza 4, also shipped with two physical discs on the Xbox 360. Still, that isn’t nearly as much as the staggering seven discs which were required for the PC edition of Grand Theft Auto 5.

The same goes for newer-generation consoles too. The Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 also include two discs in their physical copies.

However, there’s no clear-cut explanation as to why the Xbox One and Series X require two discs — given the sheer power both consoles contain respectively.

Thankfully, once you’ve installed the necessary data you won’t need to worry about the first disc anymore. That is unless you intend on deleting and reinstalling the game later, in which you’ll need to redownload the data.
