The release of next-generation consoles Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, is just a few months away, with the rumored release dates being in early November 2020. There has yet to be an official reveal of the Xbox Series S, but with a new Xbox event taking place later this month, it would be the perfect time to reveal it. Despite not being officially revealed, there have been many signs that point to the existence of the console, including it mentioned on the official Xbox Series X controller. Now the specs have leaked, and it is a really impressive system, despite being quite a bit less powerful than the Xbox Series X.
The Xbox Series S will be targeting 1440p and 60fps, unlike the much more powerful Xbox Series X that will target 4K 60fps and even 8K gaming. Both the Xbox Series X and Series S will use a 8 core/16 thread Zen 2 CPU clocked in at 3.8Ghz. However, the Series S will only have 10GB DDR6 ram, compared to the Series X which will have 16. When it comes to the GPU, the Xbox Series X will use Navi 2X GPU with a huge 52 RNDA 2.0 CUs clocked at 1.825Ghz. The Series S will use a Navi RNDA 2.0 GPU, but no information has been given regarding its clock or power. The Series X will have 12.15 TFLOPS of GPU power, whereas the Series S will have 4 TFLOPs, so it is fair to assume the GPU of the Series S will be much weaker. For storage both will use a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD; after all, games are getting incredibly large these days. They will likely both support external storage, too. To keep costs down, the Series S will be digital only whereas the Series X will have a 4K Blu-Ray drive fitted.
When it comes to price, there is no official word, but the general understanding is that the Xbox Series X will retail at $499, although figures as high as $599 have been mentioned. The Xbox Series S is expected to retail at $299 but may be as high as $399.
The August Xbox event will be the perfect time to reveal the Xbox Series S (and hopefully the price, too) but only time will tell.
