And, it is incredibly hard to find, which makes life in the apocalypse horrible. Fortunately, there are some foolproof methods that will help you find food in DayZ. So, no starving today!
There are five ways for you to quickly find food in DayZ. All of these food-finding methods have been explained in detail below:
Fruit Trees
Every spawn location in DayZ has trees that bear fruits in its area. There are three types of fruit you can get from said trees: apples, pears, and plums.
Here is how to use this food finding technique in DayZ efficiently:
- Approach any tree you might see in the beginning with your Vicinity tab open.
- Collect all the fruits you see, even rotten ones (this allows the fruits to respawn).
- Repeat.
All fruits have a chance to spawn rotten. When you stumble into these, just pick them up and drop them a few feet away. Fruit can also be dried, which makes them more resistant to decay.
The beauty of this method is that it is very easy to do and yields great results. Another nice thing is that pear and plum trees sometimes leave two fruits on the ground, giving you a nice amount of food to last a day or two.
Food Booths
When traveling around the world of DayZ, always keep an eye out for food booths, such as the one shown above. These food stalls have a high spawn change for cereal and honey, the best consumables in terms of fullness in the game.
When you enter one of these, always check the counter, shelves, and floor. Also, look inside the inventory of the various clothing items found there. They very often hold food, and even weapons and ammo, inside.
Chickens
While looking around and looting the various towns and farms in DayZ, one might hear the mighty crow of a rooster. This is perfect news for someone in need of food.
Follow the sound and find the rooster, usually along with a hen or two that are just waiting to be eaten. You can kill one with just a few punches and can pick it up in your inventory. It takes around one to two hours for the carcass to rot. Use that time to find a blade to skin and quarter it.
Here is how the whole process of finding and cooking chickens in DayZ works:
- Find, kill, and pick up a chicken.
- Put the chicken in your hands and combine it with a sharp tool.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to skin and quarter the chicken. You will get two chicken breasts out of this.
- Cook them.

Window Shopping
The normal DayZ player will first think to look inside houses to find food. This, however, is not the most efficient way to use your time if you are specifically looking for food. Houses yield many useful items, but they don’t always offer food. This is why looting houses for food is very inefficient.
This does not mean that players shouldn’t look for food in houses though. There is a less time-consuming way to do this, and that is window shopping. Pass by houses and just look inside through the windows for food. If you see nothing, there is no reason to go in.
Window shopping is great for gamers that only need one thing from these houses, as they stop wasting time looking in every crook and cranny. Oftentimes, players can find a lot of items that are close to the windows. This means that they can pick up food without even going inside!
Zombie Looter
Zombie looting is the hardest way to get food, but it usually yields great results. To do this the right way, here is what you need to do:
- Look for a building with a ground-floor window.
- Then, find a small herd of zombies and guide them back to this building.
- Quickly close the door behind you and use the voice chat from the window, to attract them there.
- Hit them through the window till they are all down. Zombies cannot hit back through windows.
One in five zombies will usually have some food or drinks on them. As stated earlier, this method can be very dangerous, and instead of finding some food, you can easily become theirs.
