Deep Rock Galactic: Grappling Hook Mods Guide

Grappling Hook Mods

If you’re looking to optimise your Deep Rock Galactic Gear setup, you’ve come to the right place! This short Grappling Hook mods guide will discuss the options for the four tiers of Grappling Hook mods and whether or not they’re worth considering in your own mod build or outright skippable.

Tier 1

  • Improved Recharger – Grappling Hook cooldown reduced by 0.5s
  • Longer Cable – Maximum range increased by 5m

Both of these are entirely valid options, although the default cooldown is 4s, so it is simultaneously not that long, and Improved Recharger only removes about 12.5% of it. Meanwhile, the difference in targetting range from Longer Cable can regularly speed up missions and save your life.

Tier 2

  • Greater Cable Stretch – Maximum range increased by 5m

Mandatory upgrade, luckily Greater Cable Stretch is a good one, as it’s a further 5m range – allowing you to go a total of 30m in one grapple if combined with Longer Cable in the previous tier, and I’d definitely recommend doing so.

Tier 3

  • High Velocity Ejection System – -0.2s wind up time
  • Overcharged Winch – Maximum speed increased by 750

Both of these choices are a bit odd, frankly. The wind-up time is already minimal without being reduced by High-Velocity Ejection System, and the travel speed is quite fast without an upgrade – adding more speed by using Overcharged Winch may well serve to launch you into a wall if you release too early.

Arguably either could save you in a panic situation with a fast grapple, personally, I’d suggest High-Velocity Ejection System as the sooner the grapple starts to pull you, the sooner you’ll be away from whatever was threatening you. Both upgrades are quite small, however.

Tier 4

  • Safety First – Fall damage reduced by 33% for 3 seconds after release.
  • Momentum – Movement speed increased by 50% for 3 seconds after release.
  • Bypassed Integrity Check – Grappling Hook cooldown reduced by 1s

Safety First sounds a bit more enticing than it actually is. It reduces fall damage after you release the hook, which is great. But it doesn’t actually flat reduce it – just takes some of the end value off. Meaning it’ll never actually prevent fall damage from occurring at any height, just takes a chunk of it away.

Momentum gives you a sizable movement speed boost after release for the same duration. Potentially useful, but usually you’re not grappling to somewhere you need to run from in the first place, so perhaps a bit of an odd choice.

Bypassed Integrity Check is the safe and reliable choice – knocking off 25% of the total grappling cooldown in one upgrade. The difference is just 4 seconds going down to 3 instead, but it does provide definite value when kiting a Dreadnought, or fleeing a horde.
