Deep Rock Galactic: Pickaxe Mods Guide

Pickaxe Mods

If you’re looking to optimise your Deep Rock Galactic Gear setup, you’ve come to the right place! This short Pickaxe mods guide will discuss the options for both tiers of pickaxe upgrades and whether or not they’re worth considering in your own mod build or outright skippable.

Now, the pickaxe really doesn’t get that many upgrade options as of the time of writing, but seeing as I plan on doing one of these for every piece of equipment if I can, I’ll have to cover it at some point.

…Yeah there really is not a great deal of choice going on here, is there?

Tier 1

  • Power Attack – Unlocks a new melee attack with the pickaxe, Power Attack. Mandatory Modificaton.

Fortunately, this is a great ability because the Power Attack serves a useful purpose – either as a fairly long cooldown damage nuke to be used on weak spots, or a desperation swing to clean out the swarm of enemies surrounding you.

It’s a good thing it’s useful too because it’s the only option in this tier – having the power attack pickaxe mod unlocked actually turns out to be very useful in typical gameplay though, so this may be worth prioritising getting early even over mods for other weapons.

Tier 2

This may actually be one of the rare cases in games where a set of mutually exclusive upgrades are all about roughly equal to each other in value and all worth considering. Colour me surprised and well done Deep Rock Galactic on that one, because that’s quite rare. Anyway, on to the choices:

Your options are:

  • Serrated Edge, for +120 Power Attack Damage.
  • Shockwave, for an additional 1m of radius for the effect of your Power Attack.
  • Better Weight Balance, to lower the cooldown of power attack by 10 seconds.

All of these options are quite good and worth considering. I’d suggest you consider how you personally use Power Attack for this choice. If you often use it to nuke large enemies, you probably can’t go wrong with the additional damage of Serrated Edge. If like me, you use it to clear off lots of small melee range attackers and save ammo, either Shockwave’s area boost or Better Weight Balance for cooldown are both valid options you can make good use of.

Well, that’s it for this one – probably the shortest piece this series will contain. For those of you hoping to read more about the pickaxe mods in Deep Rock Galactic, – though there isn’t that much more information – you can find the wiki page for the pickaxe here.
