Deep Rock Galactic: Sentry Gun Mods Guide

Sentry Gun Mods

If you’re looking to optimise your Deep Rock Galactic Gear setup, you’ve come to the right place! This short Sentry Gun Mods guide will discuss the options for the four tiers of Sentry Gun upgrades and whether or not they’re worth considering in your own mod build or outright skippable.

Tier 1

  • Gemini System – An additional sentry, and 90 more max ammo
  • LMG MKII – A superior individual sentry, with +15 ammo capacity, +2 damage and +5m targeting range

This mod choice is a difficult one, as both are perfectly valid options. I typically change between these two dependant on the mission. If the mission type is one where I am likely to have to guard a single place for a prolonged period, such as Escort or On-Site Refining, I’ll run Gemini System for the additional turret. If I expect to be moving regularly such as in a Mining OP, I’ll stick with LMG MKII.

For the majority, Gemini System does offer a greater reward but requires much more maintenance – more building time, more reloading time, more relocating. Gemini System can be outright better when you’re used to it, but LMG MKII is the standard choice if you want to simply have a strong, reliable sentry gun covering you.

Tier 2

  • Expanded Ammo Bags – A staple perk, 90 additional maximum ammo
  • Quick Deploy – Construction time reduced from 4s to 2s
  • Widemouth Refill Port – The Sentry reloads 45 rounds per second faster while being reloaded

Usually in Deep Rock Galactic, any option that gives a significant amount of additonal maximum ammo is a sure-fire good perk, as not only is it more bullets per deploy, but you also get half the amount per resupply you use as well – meaning it makes your resupply pods more valuable as well. And as usual, Expanded Ammo Bags is a reliably useful perk that you can’t go wrong with.

Quick Deploy can be worth considering if you’re using Gemini System and expect to have to move a lot. Widemouth Refill Port is mostly a trap choice, as reloading isn’t a long process already – and turrets recalled to you reload automatically while you carry them.

Tier 3

  • Hardened Rounds – +300% additional damage to armour breaks
  • Stun – +20% chance to stun per shot
  • Expanded Ammo Capacity – +30 Sentry Ammo capacity

Hardened Rounds is an excellent way to quite literally soften targets in advance with your sentry gun. It’ll make them that bit more vulnerable before you have to deal with them yourself if they survive your sentry anyway. The creatively named Stun mod will add a small stun chance per shot, which is also quite valuable.

Expanded Ammo Capacity is mostly a trap again, although can be worthwhile if you intend to either use Gemini system – to get more time between reloads, or if you intend to leave your turrets alone for extended periods. In most cases, Stun and Hardened Rounds are the clear winners here.

Tier 4

  • Defender System – +5 Damage per shot, with a restricted fire arc
  • Hawkeye System – +15m targeting range, and manual target override by ctrl+click

The final tier, Defender System versus Hawkeye System. The damage boost from Defender System looks very tempting at first, but the loss of the all-angles fire arc can be quite painful. Defender System will pair quite well with the oft-mentioned Gemini System – as it circumvents the limited fire arc weakness while compensating for Gemini System’s lower damage output.

Hawkeye System tends to win my personal preference, as the range of that combined with LMG MKII is absolutely huge at double the basic range. It’s not entirely uncommon to watch the sentry snap upwards and pour lead into the ceiling only for it to begin raining bug limbs shortly after. Additionally, the manual targeting override can be great for working down high priority targets such as Glyphid Menaces. – Defender System has its place in some missions, but if you want a reliable choice that will always be contributing to your missions, Hawkeye System edges it out as the winner of the last tier.
