Consoles love to charge you for playing online using subscription services. There is Xbox Live which is required to play multiplayer games. However, if the game has multiple online options as Minecraft does, you may not need it.
You need the Xbox Live Gold subscription to play multiplayer in Minecraft on Xbox. That includes hosting and joining the server as well as creating Minecraft Realms. Single-player and local play does not require an Xbox Live subscription.
Xbox Live Gold for Minecraft
Xbox Live Gold is a subscription service that you need to play multiplayer on Xbox games, much like there is PS Plus for PlayStation. In Minecraft, Xbox Live Gold will allow you to open your world for multiplayer in settings and join other players’ worlds. You will also need it to buy a Minecraft Realms server which is an official hosting for Minecraft servers.
Without Xbox Live Gold you can still play single-player or locally. By locally we mean that you can play either split screen or on multiple devices as long as they are connected to one network.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
Xbox Live Gold costs $9.99/month and you will need it for online play in any game you already bought. Free to play games, however, do not need this subscription. So games like Apex, Warzone, and Fortnite can be played online for free.
If you are not very keen to spend ten dollars a month on this subscription, you can get yourself Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It offers you a huge library of games to play on Xbox. And it also includes the Xbox Live Gold which will allow you to play Minecraft online. Although it costs $14.99/month it could be a great deal if you haven’t bought many games just yet.
