How to Couch Lance in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Updated:

Bannerlord’s combat system has always been something that players loved. It’s complex and allows you to fight enemy armies in a variety of ways. Learning how to couch lance in Bannerlord is only one of many tricks that you need to know if you want to excel at combat in this game.

A couched lance will allow you to hit singled-out enemies better when riding a horse, and it’s mainly meant for putting down highly armed opponents. Couching your lance isn’t hard, but we don’t recommend using it for every attack that you do with your horse.

How to Use a Couch Lance in Bannerlord?

First off, if you want to be able to couch a lance you’ll need a specific type of polearm. Only lances and pikes that have the ‘Couch Lance‘ tag can be couched in battle. Finding out if a lance or pike has this tag is easy, just hover your mouse over the said weapon and check its tags.

In order to couch your lance whilst riding a horse, you’ll need to get up to a high enough speed. Once you’ve gained some significant speed, press X (default button) to couch your lance. Once your lance is couched, you’ll need to find an enemy and rush into them to deal damage.

Time Your Couch

One thing to note is that you’ll have to wait a couple of seconds before you can couch your lance again. We’d recommend carefully timing your couch, as it won’t allow you to do it in quick succession after.

As with most mechanics in this game, couching your lance can be a bit clunky and buggy. Make sure to properly line up your enemy with the side your couched lance is on. And it can get even worse when you’re fighting a large army.

Can you Craft a Couch Lance in Bannerlord?

As mentioned previously, you’ll need specific types of two-handed or one-handed polearms that have the ‘Couch Lance’ tag on them to be able to couch.

The best way to get yourself a polearm that you can couch with is to craft/smith it via city smithies. This will require you to have a higher smithing skill. So, if you’re not leveling smithing, then just stick to looting after battles.

Crafting any sort of weapon will require parts, and the part that determines if you can couch a lance is the handle. There are many handles that one can choose from in the smithy.

But, if you want a lance to couch, you need to see if the handle has the ‘Couch Lance‘ tag. You can always try crafting one for yourself. Experimenting in the smithy will only help you understand Bannerlord in a better way.

To say the least, there are a lot of factors in this game that can drive you to an early grave. The couch and other mechanics can help you avoid such unfortunate possibilities.

Bannerlord is popular for its countless features, and looking into more guides will definitely help you understand it better:
