Pumpkin seeds are one of the most versatile items in Minecraft, used for planting pumpkins, befriending parrots, and breeding chickens. We’ll cover all the ways that you can get pumpkin seeds in Minecraft down below.

Getting Pumpkin Seeds

There are a few different ways that you can get hold of pumpkin seeds in Minecraft.

Farming Pumpkins

The most reliable way to get them is through farming pumpkins. To start a pumpkin farm, you’ll first need to find some pumpkins in the wild. Pumpkins are fairly common wild plants, randomly appearing in small patches across any biome that has grass blocks.

Once you find some pumpkins, you can shear or harvest them to get their seeds, then take the seeds back to your base to plant them.

By planting pumpkin seeds, you’ll start a pumpkin farm, and give yourself access to unlimited pumpkins. With the farm set up, shear any fully grown pumpkins to get some seeds, then harvest them to add the full pumpkin block to your inventory. You can then open the crafting menu to turn each pumpkin block into more seeds.

When performing this method, be sure to only shear and harvest the fully grown pumpkin heads, leaving the stems intact. If you cut the stems, no more pumpkins will grow until a new seed is planted.

Finding Seeds in a Structure

While farming pumpkins is by far the easiest way to get pumpkin seeds, you can also find them in chests within some of Minecraft’s rare structures. These structures are pre-generated areas that spawn randomly within biomes and are often very hard to locate.

The structures that can have pumpkin seeds inside are:

  • Dungeon
  • Mineshaft
  • Village (Taiga biome only)
  • Woodland Mansion

These structures are hard to come by, so don’t rely on them to find pumpkin seeds. Instead, just keep an eye out for some seeds if you happen to come across one of these structures.

Buying Pumpkin Seeds From a Wandering Trader

The final way to get pumpkin seeds in Minecraft is through trading with a wandering trader, the NPC that will often follow you with his group of pet llamas.

Unfortunately, the price he sells pumpkin seeds for is enormous, asking for one emerald in exchange for the seeds. Needless to say, this is not a fair trade, and you’re much better off farming for seeds instead.

As far as Minecraft is concerned, there are tons of blocks and items to find and craft. Some of them will make your house prettier, others will completely destroy it:
