Whether you’re simply traveling or hunting, knowing how to make a spear in The Forest will help you tackle the many dangers that await you. There are a lot of threats that you encounter in this game, and none of them are easy to handle, which is why it’s smart to have multiple types of weapons on you at any time.
Spears are one of the most versatile weapons in The Forest, and they can offer you a degree of protection that not many weapon types can. Considering how many factors can end your existence in this game, you’re going to need to learn how to handle and make spears eventually.
It can be thrown and used as a melee weapon against incoming opponents, making it great for hunting and defending in general. The reason why it’s so good at defending mainly boils down to the fact that it can repel enemy lounges, and that it one-shot headshots most cannibals.
Moving on, there are multiple types of spears that one can craft/utilize in this game:
- Weak Spear
- Upgraded Spear
- Incendiary Spear
We’re first going to be covering the weakest rendition of spears; the Weak Spear.
How to Make a Weak Spear in The Forest
The Weak Spear is the most basic beginner weapon that you can craft in the Forest. It’s great for most activities except offensive mutant/cannibal hunting. And at the end of the day, players mainly use it to hunt, fish and finish off wounded cannibals. Additionally, using a Weak Spear to open suitcases is faster and more efficient.
If you want to craft the Weak Spear, you’ll have to gather and combine 2 sticks in your backpack/crafting menu. Gathering sticks is quite easy, and you can usually find them near trees and forage them from smaller sapling trees.
Weaker Spears aren’t really your go-to weapon for later stages of the playthrough, but they sure are one of the most vital tools in the beginning.
Spear Bag
You never know when a deer or crocodile might be in your vicinity, which is why it’s important to have more than 1 Weak Spear in your inventory. Now, with that being said, in order to hold more than 1 Weak Spear at a time, you’re going to need a Spear Bag.
Spear Bags allow the player to carry up to 5 Weak Spears at once. This pouch is great for hunting, as you won’t have to stop and craft a weak spear after missing your shot or losing the target.
You’ll need the following materials to craft a Spear Bag:
- 2 Deer Skin
- 2 Boar Skin
- 2 Cloth
- 3 Rope

How to Make an Upgraded Spear in The Forest

Spears in general are very hard to master in The Forest. That is why you’ll need to learn how to craft a better version of it in order to excel not just at hunting, but in combat as well. An upgraded spear is in every way better than its weaker counterpart and will offer you more melee range due to its new modifications.
Crafting an upgraded spear is going to cost more, but it’s definitely worth it in the long run. Here’s what materials you need to combine to craft an upgraded spear:
- 1 Weak Spear
- 2 pieces of Cloth
- 3 Bones

As opposed to weak spears, upgraded spears can effectively be used against cannibals in offensive combat. They’re more versatile and pack more of a punch with each hit. However, we still advise against taking on a group of cannibals with any type of spear because spears don’t deal AoE damage.
Spear bags won’t be able to store upgraded spears meaning that you won’t be able to carry more than 1 upgraded spear at a time. That’s why we don’t recommend throwing upgraded spears at enemies, stick to weak spears for throwing.

How to Add a Poison Upgrade to Upgraded Spears
Another more hidden type of spear that you can make in The Forest would be a spear with the Poison upgrade. People either forget or don’t know you can apply a poison upgrade to an upgraded spear, which is why this type of spear isn’t as popular as the other ones.
If you want to go ahead and apply a poison upgrade to an upgraded spear, you’ll have to combine the following mushrooms/berries with an upgraded spear in your backpack’s crafting space:
- 4 Twinberries/Snowberries
- 1 Jack/Amanita Mushroom

Even though they aren’t as well-known as incendiary spears, poisonous spears greatly reduce your opponent’s movement speed upon impact. This, in tandem with incendiary spears, will allow you to properly control a large horde of cannibals and mutants.
As for berries and mushrooms, you should be able to find them all over the peninsula. By the time you’re ready to take on larger hordes, you’ll most likely have a nice pouch full of mushrooms and berries anyway. However, in case you don’t know how to properly forage, here’s a small guide
Foraging for Berries & Mushrooms

Mushrooms can be found all over the map, and they don’t really spawn in fixed locations. You’ll simply have to explore the map in search of specific berries and mushrooms. Jack and Amanita mushrooms do have a tendency to grow near streams and villages, so keep a vigilant eye out for that.
As for berries, their spawn locations are also somewhat of a wild and random card. They spawn everywhere, with Blueberries being the most common type of berry. Twinberries and Snowberries are used for Poison Upgrades and are also randomly found throughout the map.

Now, what you’re going to need when foraging for mushrooms and berries is a pouch. A pouch is vital in foraging and allows you to hold up to 30 additional berries and 10 additional mushrooms. A pouch is easy to make and will require you to combine 2 Rabbit Furs in your backpack.
How to Make an Incendiary Spear in The Forest
There’s a reason why a lot of cannibals and mutants choose to hide in caves. Fire and sunlight in general is something they aren’t very fond of, yet that’s exactly what we can use to our advantage.
Incendiary spears are the last, and arguably the most badass version of the spear we can craft in The Forest. From the looks of it, incendiary spears are literally just upgraded spears with molotov cocktails attached. Throwing this at anyone will definitely hinder their ability to think straight.

The recipe for making an incendiary spear is as follows:
- 1 Bottle of Booze
- 1 Upgraded Spear
- 1 Cloth

Combining all of these materials will successfully transform your upgraded spear into an incendiary spear. But, once you throw your new incendiary spear and it explodes, it’ll only be available to pick up as a normal upgraded spear.
Another thing to note is that incendiary spears are great against huge mutants. They’ll immediately set mutants on fire and allow you to easily release a barrage of arrows. Although spears aren’t as effective against cannibals in direct combat, they aren’t the only creatures trying to end your life on this cursed peninsula.
Crocodiles and boars are as real of a threat as cannibals, and spears make quick work of those animals.

To top it all off, spears are also useful for foraging and material gathering. You can quickly open a lot of suitcases and gather a lot of miscellaneous materials. When it comes down to it, you’re going to need to know how to make a spear in The Forest, and we doubt that you’ll be able to survive long without one.
