How to Use the Blood Altar in Path of Exile

Updated:

Beastcrafting is a powerful way to upgrade your Path of Exile build. Through the use of the Blood Altar, you can sacrifice beasts to create unique equipment, generate currency, and modify items. Using the Blood Altar can be a daunting idea for many players. Luckily, it’s simple once you know how.

Here’s your complete guide to using the Blood Altar in Path of Exile.

Unlocking The Blood Altar

To unlock the Blood Altar, you’ll first have to gain access to the Menagerie. It’s a dungeon that you can unlock by completing a task for Einhar, Beastmaster.

You can find Einhar in the Forest Encampment, the Act 2 hub. Speak to him, and he’ll ask you to hunt some beasts in the nearby riverway. Take out the beasts there, then return to speak with him again.

You can now visit the Menagerie by talking to Einhar or warping there from a waypoint. You’ll find the Blood Altar in a small clearing towards the entrance to the Menagerie.

Using the Blood Altar to craft items relies on recipes made up of captured beasts. Each recipe in the Blood Altar menu will have different beast icons next to it which show which types of beast you’ll need in order to complete the recipe.

If you don’t have the required beasts to complete a recipe, one or more icons next to the recipe will be gray instead of colored. If this is the case, you’ll have to head out into the world and capture some beasts.

Unfortunately, your options for capturing beasts are fairly limited, with only two methods available as of patch 3.18.

Capturing Beasts

The first method is through cooperating with Einhar. From Act 2 onwards, there is a random chance that Einhar will spawn and join you in your fight against a group of beasts. Throughout the fight, Einhar will throw nets at beasts with low health, capturing them for beastcrafting.

If you want to avoid the randomness of this method, you can capture beasts yourself by heading into Azurite Mine, an infinite dungeon unlocked in Act 4.

Once inside the dungeon, you’ll have to look for a Beast Burrow, a node found inside the Fungal Caverns biome. Any beasts you kill while in the Beast Burrow will be automatically captured, ready for use back at the Blood Altar.

Once you have the required beasts, use the Blood Altar menu to select a recipe, then hit the ‘Craft’ button. This will cause the beasts used in the recipe to spawn around you as enemies.  You must now defeat these beasts inside the Blood Altar arena. If you die, the crafting will fail, and your beasts will escape.

If you succeed in killing every beast, the item you’ve chosen to craft will appear on the Blood Altar. Simply place it in your inventory to claim it and complete the beastcrafting process.
