Unfortunately, it looks like due to the current state of the world, Minecraft Earth will be ending and completely shutting down on June 30th.
It seems like only yesterday when the Minecraft team announced their own AR-version of Minecraft, similar to Pokémon Go. It was certainly an ambitious idea but could not seem to rival Pokémon Go, which was a massive hit in 2016 with millions of players and you could always see groups of people running around outside to fight gyms or catch new Pokémon.
The Minecraft Team said in their announcement that the game was “designed around free movement and collaborative play – two things that have become near impossible in the current global situation”. This probably does not come as a surprise to many, due to most of us being required to stay home and avoid contact with others, making it hard to enjoy games such as Minecraft Earth or Pokémon Go.
Although the game will be disappearing soon on June 30th, the Minecraft Team still gave the game one last update to make the last few months of the game as enjoyable as possible to players. Some of the perks of this new update include the removal of real-money transactions, reduced ruby costs, offering a set of Character Creator items, and more.
There’s another silver lining, as well. If you have paid ruby balances, the Minecraft Team will be offering Minecoins in return, as well as if you have made any purchase on the game, you will receive a free copy of Minecraft, which is certainly not a bad deal at all.

While the game was released only around a year ago, I think this is the best move for the Minecraft Team as the game did not have significant popularity, and that way they can focus on other Minecraft endeavors. Minecraft also had a resurgence in popularity in 2020, most likely due to many of us staying indoors and many popular YouTubers picking up the game again.
Especially since the current state of the world does not seem to be letting up anytime soon, it will be a while before we can all enjoy collaborative games like Minecraft Earth again. Once that day comes, though, it will be fun to finally get outside again and enjoy these games with friends.
